passed on lap two by Carmichael, Millsaps ran a lonely race in second, fin- ishing more than 40 seconds behind Carmichael and about 14 ahead of Windham. However, in moto two, he was not able to hold off Windham. "I knew it was him," Millsaps said. "I knew Stewart was out and Reed was hurt, so it had to be him. When he went by me, there was nothing I could do; he was going faster than me. I tried keeping up for a little bit, but couldn't." By not being able to hold off Windham in the second moto, Millsaps lost out on a second-overall finish, and he lost control of third overall in the series standings by a single point to Windham. Reed took several laps to get going in both motos, but he put on late-race charges each time, almost catching Millsaps for third in the second moto. "I just struggled at the beginning, I was so stiff and sore at the beginning," Reed said. "[My knee] would just warm up a little, and I would have a little squirt there at the end. That was from just not giving up and trying to be strong. It was a little disappointing not to be on the podium, but the new bike was good, and I actually felt good here. So I am actually leaving with a little smile on my face that I gave it everything I had." Tim Ferry had his best finish of the year with consistent 5-5 moto finishes that resulted in a fifth-overall score. The Unbound Energy/Moto XXX rider held off Reed for a big part of the second moto before yielding to the Yamaha rider at the halfway mark. "Overall, I am happy with today's ride," Ferry said. In the second moto, Vuillemin gated poorly, finishing the first lap in 13th, but he moved quickly through the pack to sixth place by the halfway mark, just behind Reed. "It was a good race for me today, with a consistent 6-6," Vuillemin said. "I got a good start in the first moto and was maybe fifth. Wey did a mistake in the first moto and I beat him, and in the second moto, I passed him again, so it was kind of good for me. We were all together in the second moto, too. And we were not too far from Reed at one point, so we were riding good. But Reed picked it up and took off. But I am happy with 6-6." 16 John Dowd 11-11 10th Place Crowd favorite John Dowd went 11-11 for 10th overall, despite suffering bad starts in both motos. The Suzuki rider finished the opening lap of moto one in 22nd position and charged steadily through the field, passing Kyle Partridge and Josh Summey on lap nine before set- tling into 11th. In the second moto, Dowdy had a somewhat easier road to an eventual 11th place after rounding the first lap in 17th position. "The track was actually pretty good, considering the rain we had yesterday," Dowd said. "I feel like I rode pretty well, but my starts were terrible; I don't know what was wrong. The first moto, I hit neutral trying to make a shift, and I came out of the first turn in 30th, or worse. In the second moto, I was midpack. So I had a lot of work to do. But I made it through the day." 144 Kyle Partridge 14-17 15th Place Kyle Partridge ran as high as seventh place during the second moto and diced it out with David Vuillemin before experiencing a cramping problem with his hands and dropping off the pace. In the first moto, the BooKoo/Holigan Honda-backed rider ran a more consis- tent race, completing the first lap in 13th and eventually finishing in 14th. "I got a decent start in the second moto and passed Vuillemin at one point, and me and him were going at it. But my hands have been cramping up real bad lately and, at about halfway, I couldn't hold on," Partridge said. "I don't know what it is, because I am not really get- ting physically tired and I am not getting too winded. So I have just got to figure out what is happening with my hands. I need to just go back home and work the kinks out and show these guys here at BooKoo that I deserve to have another ride for next year. So hopefully I will come back next week after busting my butt this week and get a top-10 finish in Colorado." 23 Kyle Lewis 10-9 9th Place Unbound Energy/Moto XXX's Kyle Lewis turned in a strong performance in New York and put on late charges in both motos to finish 10-9 for ninth overall. In the second moto, Lewis started the race in 10th but then dropped back as far as 15th before putting in a late-race charge that carried him to ninth at the checkers. "It was a tough day," Lewis said. "I was eating a lot of roost and it was pretty rocky out there, but I just dug down deep at the end of the second moto, when guys started fading. I've been working on my cardio quite a bit, and it is paying off. I have been riding road bikes at home and I have just been hammering it. The guys are working real hard to make the bike better, and I am just trying to put the same effort in. It was a good day and I will take it." 686 Josh Demuth 17-13 13th Place Josh Demuth has been going like gangbusters all year, but he ran into a slump at Unadilla, where he went 17-13 for 13th overall. The "Sheriff " improved on a first-moto 17th by turning a better start into a 13th-place finish in moto two. "It didn't go too well today," Demuth said. "I had to run a qualifier earlier today, and I just got off to a horrible start in the first moto. I never really felt comfortable and just couldn't relax on the bike. I was a little upset with the first-moto finish; it's not up to my expectations. So I talked it over with my team and we found some better lines and changed a few things on the bike, and I came back with a 13th." Chad Reed hurt his knee in practice and nearly pulled out of the race, but he ended up riding and went 4-4 for fourth.
