JULY 26, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 54 BY LARRY WOOSTER PALMYRA, NY, JUNE 25 P auly Carpenter pummeled 'em at Palmyra, sight of the second rounds of both the Scott USA/Acerbis Northeast Gold Cup Champi- onship Series and the Race Tools WNYMA Sum- mer Series, presented by KSA Racing. Two of the WNYMA's favorite sons returned to action this week on Hogback Hill, with Pauly taking his first WNYMA gate drop of 2006 and his cousin "Jumpin' Jack" Carpenter rebounding from his Daytona Supercross misfortune. Jack looks 110- percent ready for the outdoor Nationals, as does Pauly, as the Carpenters hammered this pretty technical motocross facility. With NEGCCS sponsors posting $40,000 in products to the top five overall finishers, this series is drawing the best of the best from hundreds of miles around, including a lot of out-of-district riders and Canadian riders. In the 35-rider 16-24 class, Brandon Meier had Ken Burger, Willy Shatrau, Travis Webber, Broc Donnison, Pa u l y C a r p e n t e r, A l e x Sigismondi, Jason Owens and a thundering herd of four-stroke riders in his rearview mirror. After 2 1/2 laps, Meier still held the lead, but Sigismondi was now in second, with Pauly all over his rear fender. Meier stumbled, and Sigismondi grabbed the lead and Pauly snatched second. Sigismondi stumbled on the newer section of Hogback Hill, alongside the woods, about 14 minutes into the 16-minute moto; the next thing he knew, Pauly was inside and looking to pass. Possibly the youngest and fastest Expert the WNYMA has seen since who knows when responded by grabbing another gear and pulling back out front. Pauly was stalking "Ziggy," and on the final lap, diving into Gravity Cavity, Pauly made the pass. Sigismondi made one final run at snatching victory, whaling the final berm leading to the checkered flag, but Pauly held strong, winning by the skin of his front Dunlop. Donnison outdueled Webber for third, and Shatrau shook out fourth. Meier was out with a flat tire. Meier again nailed the holeshot in moto two, over Burger on the outside and a cautious Pauly Carpenter, Webber and Matt Harding in hot pursuit. Pauly passed Meier for the lead on the first lap and never looked back. Well, okay, he did look back... because Ziggy was itchy and was stalking his former stalker. Pauly gapped Sigismondi a second per lap, as these two totally checked out on this big class of riders. Meier, without mechanical issues this time, showed his mettle by claiming third place in moto, holding off challenges from Donnison. John Young III (who had gotten a horrible first-moto start) worked his butt off, climbing into the top five - only to have the berm pulled out from under him, as he stalled out and dropped back. Pauly Carpenter (1-1) claimed another first overall, over Sigismondi (2-2), Donnison (3-4), Webber (4-7) and Shatrau (5-8). PHOTO BY LARRY WOOSTER BY CLAY LIGHT ONALASKA, WA, JUNE 24 W ashington's Brad Hagseth has had his ups and downs throughout the CMC Pac West Motocross Nationals, but the Suzuki rider from Centralia had things going his way at round seven of the series, held at Burnt Ridge MX Park. Hagseth was a front-runner in four classes, winning the 125cc and Over 25 Pro classes, and he also placed second overall in two others, the 125cc and Over 30 Pro class- es, finishing the day as the top money winner. Yamaha rider Tony Boughten, Hagseth, and Oregon's Adam Metzler were the top performers in the 250cc Pro class, staying in close formation throughout both motos, but in the end it was Arlington, Washington's Boughten who aced both motos. Despite having the hometrack advantage, Hagseth couldn't stop the talented teenager and placed second overall, ahead of Metzler (2-3), Alaska's Jerry Lymburner (4-4) and Oregon's Pete Sannan (7-5). Hagseth's results improved in the 125cc Pro class, as his finishes in the two motos replicated those of Boughten's earlier 250cc win. Hagseth was the cream of the crop in both motos, fending off Boughten and Lymburner in the opening moto, and then leading Metzler (who crashed in moto one and came back strong in moto two) to win overall. Boughten placed third in moto two and, coupled with his second-place finish in moto one, garnered second overall, followed by Metzler (5-2), Sannan (4-5) and Idaho's Sam De Atley (6-4). Dan Moore and Hagseth split moto wins in the competitive Over 30 Pro class, with Moore winning overall. Former National number holder Scott Tyler finished third to Moore and Hagseth, for third overall. Hagseth's second of two overall wins came in the Over 25 Pro class, in which he topped both motos. Moore used 2-2 finishes to net second overall, ahead of Yamaha riders Craig Bergemeier and Joe Brockway. Yamaha-mounted Troy Boggs was among the few double-class winners on the day, posting the overall 250cc and Before The Hill Junior-class victories. Boggs went undefeated in the two classes, despite large numbers of riders in both events. Ryan Skinner placed second to Boggs in the BTH class, using 3-2 finishes to take the second-place laurels, followed by T.J. Guzman (4-3), Oregon's Jeremiah Sparks (5-5) and Travis McClinton (8-4). The day 's largest class was the 32-rider 125cc Junior class. Washington' s J e r r i d Southard and Oregon's McClinton went head to head in both motos, but it was Southard's 1-2 finishes that earned the Honda rider the overall win. While McClinton won the second moto, his opening-moto fifth-place finish left him in second overall, while series class points leader Sparks had a so-so day and finished sixth overall with his two sixth-place finishes. Landon Currier, one of the Northwest's top 85cc riders, made a rare appearance and chased Tapia in both motos to place second o v e r a l l .
