Vet X Spring Series Round 5: Cahuilla Creek MX McGrath Conquers Cahuilla Creek BY STEVE EMTER ANZA, CA, JUNE 10 J eremy McGrath came out to the fifth round of the Vet X Spring Series to do battle in the Pro classes for some spring training. With picture-perfect weather and Cahuilla Creek's fast-flowing track, the day shaped up to be an exciting one, as several riders lined up on the gate to try to give McGrath an honest challenge. The Open Pro class had a stacked gate, including several National-caliber riders such as David Pingree and Michael Sleeter. When the gate dropped for the first moto, a herd of four-strokes thundered down the start and into the first corner. McGrath grabbed the early lead, chased by Tyson Taylor, Pingree and Sleeter. McGrath tried to stretch out his lead, but Taylor, riding an unfamiliar loaner bike, was keeping McGrath on the run. As they made their way around the back of the track, McGrath hit a large triple jump, gaining time on Taylor, back in second. On lap two, the order remained the same, with Taylor trying to catch McGrath, jumping the triple behind him, and their battle pulled the two front-runners away from third-placed Pingree. After three laps of repeat performances, McGrath started to wear Taylor down and pull away. Unfortunately, after six laps, Taylor went down just before the run up to the triple, crashing into a DNF. This left second place to Pingree, a far distance behind the leader, and moved Sleeter into third. That's how they finished. McGrath again pulled out to an early lead in the second moto, with Pingree trailing. Sleeter pulled off the track before the end of the first lap, putting Andy Bakken into third. McGrath cruised to an easy win in this moto, while Bakken worked hard in third to catch Pingree. When the checkers flew, Pingree held on to second place in the moto as well as second overall with 2-2 finishes, behind McGrath's sweep. Bakken took third for the day with 4-3 finishes. In the Over 28 Pro class, McGrath again took an easy 1-1 sweep, leaving the field far behind in both motos. Second in the class was MTA's Willy Musgrave, with a pair of second-place finishes, leaving third place to David McCown, who put his RM-Z450 into third in both motos. In the 36-42 Novice class, Ben West was able to make a last- lap pass on Dawson Leachman to take the first-moto win. Charging from fifth to first, West took the lead on the last lap from Leachman, who had led from the first lap. Third went to Mike Gee, who had to defend his position against West, but ultimately gave up second spot and settled for third. Moto two was going to be a shootout, as Leachman was seeking revenge. Unfortunately, West had trouble on the first lap, coming around in 11th place, leaving the front of the pack to Leachman. In this moto, Leachman's challenger was David Bress, who worked his way into the lead after passing Leachman on lap four and held on for the win. Second went to Antoin Daily, who made a charge from fifth to take the second podium step. Overall, Leachman took the win with 2-3 finishes, while Daily (4-2) was second and Gee (3-4) was third.
