JULY 12, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 62 BY ELAINE JONES COSTA MESA, CA, JUNE 10 T he "Godfather of Speedway" was honored Saturday night with the running of the Jack Milne Cup at Costa Mesa Speedway. Jack Milne, Lammy Lamaroux and Cordy Milne went one- two-three, giving the Americans a clean sweep at the World Speedway Championships in 1937. No other nation has ever achieved that on for- eign soil. Jack came back to his business in the states, and Harry Oxley went to work for him. From the stories Jack told, Oxley was bitten by the speedway bug, and in 1969 Speedway Oxley came to Costa Mesa. This was the year that Charlie "The Edge" Venegas would lay claim to the Milne Cup. It was an all-Scratch program, with three r o u n d s o f r a c i n g . T h e t o p 1 0 i n p o i n t s transferred to the two semis. The first Scratch semi had Venegas on the pole, with Shawn "Mad Dog" McConnell in two and Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz in three. On the outside were Tommy Hedden and "Fast Ed" Castro. Venegas got the gate, but it was Schwartz who took the lead and held it in the quick four-lapper. Venegas was good for second and would transfer with Schwartz to the main. Castro and McConnell got ready for the last-chance qualifier. The second semi was all Faria's, as he went wire to wire. Nate Perkins, who has been on fire this season, was a solid second. Bryan Yarrow and Buck Blair were headed to the LCQ. Yarrow was ready, and when the gate came up, he took control of the LCQ. He would be the final man in the Scratch main. They rolled to the line and drew for start position, based on points earned. Faria was on the pole, with Venegas in two, Perkins in three, and Yarrow and Schwartz on the outside. They loaded in, the light went green and the tapes came up. It was Faria out on top, but Venegas took it to another place and got the pass on t h e s e c o n d l a p a n d n e v e r l o o k e d b a c k . Schwartz, from the outside, had locked into third, but he was unable to find the chink in Faria's armor. They would finish in that order. On back, it was Yarrow and Perkins. Chris Metoyer has been a bridesmaid a lot, but on Saturday he got the ride he'd been looking for and won the Support main, topping Billy Braden and Robert Fiesler. S t e v e D z i a d u s J r. t o o k t o p h o n o r s i n Support B, with young lady Kim Stevens placing second. Dan Wensloff was third. Jason Ramirez continues to dominate the Juniors, as he topped Gino Manares, Austin Norvratil and Joey Holt on the evening. Ryan Fisher and Justin Boyle both had hard crashes. Hopefully they are healing and on the road to wellness. CN COSTA MESA SPEEDWAY COSTA MESA, CALIFORNIA RESULTS: JUNE 10, 2006 SCR: 1. Charlie Venegas (Jaw); 2. Mike Faria (Jaw); 3. PHOTOS BY CHRIS JONES The Edge Wins the Milne Cup BY BRITTON SIGLER LOS BANOS, CA, JUNE 10 L os Banos, California, is a little farming town located right between Interstate 5 and Highway 99. Banos "that's what the racers call it" Fairgrounds is transformed into a Summer- Cross mecca each summer. This year is no dif- ferent. AMP has 10 rounds of great racing and family fun on the schedule. Round one saw a new, tougher track layout than at past Top Gun events. The AMP crew imported truckloads of sand from Atwater, California, to turn the rodeo rink into a fun and challenging racetrack for every level of rider. The day's racing decides who the 12 fastest riders are and in what order they will line up for the night's Top Gun main event. Eric McCrummen of Oakley, California, won both the 250cc and 125cc Pro classes and earned the last starting spot for the Top Gun m a i n e v e n t . Tu r b o Re i f o f A t a s c a d e r o , California, would line up 10 feet in front of McCrummen, with the other 10 fastest Pros out of the 22 Pros on hand for round one staged halfway around the track. When the green flag fell, McCrummen got an awesome jump and went to work immediately. By lap four, McCrummen had blown by the whole field in what has to be a Top Gun record. McCrummen blew by and then gapped the likes of Jeff Pestana, Cory McDaniel, and the rest of Northern California's fastest racers, and it seemed this race was over! However, one does not have a name like "Turbo" without a good reason. In a jaw- dropping, I-cannot-believe-what-I-just-saw effort, Reif charged in and stole the win and the night's purse. The huge Banos crowd went crazy over Reif 's purse-snatching of what everyone thought had McCrummen's name all over it. Wow, what a race!
