Crown Series (High Point, Red Bud and Steel City). "To be honest, I actually forgot about the Monster Triple Crown," Carmichael said. "I got so many other things on my mind right now, but I think I'll remember that one now!" Stewart seemed happy to be back in action after missing the Budds Creek round with a sore knee, but he seemed to back it own a notch, as well. Stewart rode exceptionally well and let no one by him all day except for the winning pass by Carmichael in the second moto, but he also, understandably, did not chal- lenge Carmichael as he has in the past. "It sucked sitting at home watching them race," Stewart said. "I'm riding my heart out out there, and I just need to focus on getting the bikes better and not being hurt and not being able to ride. I will actually be able to sleep tonight without being sore, and I'm having fun out here again." Stewart's lap times throughout the day were a bit off of Carmichael's, but he was one of the few that consistently jumped LaRoccos' Leap lap after lap. "A lot of guys had a hard time jumping it today, but I enjoyed doing it for the crowd," Stewart said. Third on the day was Team Yamaha's Chad Reed who rode to a quiet third both times out. Reed started in third in the first moto and stayed there, all alone, for most of the race. A seventh-place start made for a bit more work the sec- ond time out, but after reeling in Honda- mounted riders Davi Millsaps, Tim Ferry and Kevin Windham, Reed settled into the position again and rounded out the final step on the podium. "They set a high pace for me to reach, but I liked the track today," Reed said. "I was sleeping on the start of the second moto and had a good battle there for a while with Windham. I tried to wear him down, and I felt that I rode well, and that I ride better with a bad start. I was happy to be battling someone here today, because the crowd was huge and the track was rough." Reed currently holds second in the points standing, 30 points behind Carmichael. SoBe/Samsung Mobile/Honda's Kevin Windham was fourth overall with a pair of fourth-place finishes. Windham start- ed in ninth in the first moto and plugged away on passing riders on the fairly one- lined track, eventually catching Nick Wey, David Vuillemin and Davi Millsaps. Some serious blisters in the second moto held Windham down a bit, as he started in sixth and only advanced two positions throughout the moto. "I have the speed, I just had to adjust my riding style in the second moto due to my hand," Windham said. "I had it handed to me on a silver platter, but I was riding with pretty much one hand, and I blew over berms, overjumped jumps and my hand kept coming off the bars." Windham admitted that he still does- n't feel one-hundred percent since com- ing back from his broken arm. "I still feel that I'm coming back from injury," he said. "You need to race with these guys every week or you lose that Red Bud Track 'n' Trail Buchanan, MI Round 5 July 2, 2006 JULY 12, 2006 • C Y C L E N E W S 18 2006 Toyota AMA Motocross Championship Series Presented by FMF MY OWN RACE 40 Ryan Mills 22nd Place Rockstar Suzuki's Ryan Mills struggled at Red Bud. Bike problems in the first moto and a crash in the second moto ruined his day. "I got a bad start in the first moto and then the clutch went out, but I was able to pull off a top 20," he said. "In the second moto, me and my teammate [Sean Hamblin] decided to take each other out and we both DNFed!" 118 Davi Millsaps 5th Place Team Honda's Millsaps was in the thick of the action upfront during both motos, but he faded slightly at the halfway mark of each race. He wasn't too pleased with his 5-6 moto scores. "I rode horrible," he said. "I want to be upfront and I'm not riding to my potential. I need to work on it." Millsaps holds down fourth in the points, just one point behind Kevin Windham. 32 Ryan Clark 14th Place Team Solitaire/Fly's Ryan Clark was disappointed with his 14-16 moto scores. "This was one of my poorer results so far this season," he said. "I played catch-up after being run off the track in the first moto, and I collided with a guy in the second moto which bent my bike up real bad. I just charged to the end." 15 Tim Ferry 6th Place Unbound/Moto XXX's Tim Ferry was on the gas at Red Bud, especially in the second moto where he started third and stayed there for over seven laps before being overtaken by Windham and Reed. "It wasn't too bad for an old guy," Ferry said. "I felt good today. I got some confidence back, the bike is getting dialed, and the hard work is paying off. I got good starts and rode well and my speed has always been there - I just need to put it all together." 23 Kyle Lewis 10th Place Unbound/Moto XXX's Kyle Lewis had a good day at Red Bud pulling down two consistent 10th-place moto finishes. "I've been training more and riding good all year, it's just been small things, like bikes and parts breaking, that hurt," he said. "In fact, I lost my brakes in the second moto!" Lewis holds down 14th in the points and noted that he will probably ride full-time for one more year. Kevin Windham rode well but blistered hands hurt his progress. Tim Ferry is beginning to look like his old self again, run- ning up front for much of the second moto.
