C Y C L E N E W S • JULY 12, 2006 19 SoBe/Samsung Mobile's Joaquim Rodrigues was back in action at Red Bud after missing the entire season due to a bro- ken leg while practicing for the Lites Eastern Regional Supercross opener. Rodrigues said, "I went through two surgeries and it's been nine months since I've last raced, so I just want to get back on the track and see how I feel." Rodrigues rode to respectable 14-17 finishes in the Lites class for 17th overall. He also noted that his contract is up at the end of this season. Makita Suzuki's Ivan Tedesco was spectat- ing at Red Bud. "I'm just out here watching today and expect to be back on the track at Millville in August." Tedesco injured his shoulder at the Las Vegas Supercross. Missing from action at Red Bud were SoBe/Samsung Mobile/Honda's Billy Lani- novich and Monster Pro Circuit's Grant Langston, who crashed together at Budds Creek. Laninovich will be out for the remainder of the season to have knee sur- gery and Langston is expected to be out for a few more rounds. According to Fox rep Scott Taylor, both Ricky Carmichael and James Stewart had special commemorative Red Bud Fox gear on at the event that they gave to Red Bud owner Gene Ritchie and his children Tim and Amy. Carmichaels' pants read, 'Comfort Zone,' indicating his large points lead in the Motocross class. Red Bull KTM's Jay Marmont was missing from action at Red Bud. "He injured his knee, and we think he'll miss three races," said KTM's new North American racing manager Kurt Nicoll. "He tore come carti- lage. To be honest, he tore it when he was carrying some bags and tripped on a curb." Yamaha of Troy's Andrew McFarlane is heading to Florida to train with fellow Aussie Chad Reed. "I'm going to spend some time with Chad in the next few weeks," said McFarlane. "Up until now I've been in Cali- fornia doing my own thing. This is a lot dif- ferent than racing in Europe or Australia, the tracks get really bumpy, and I really do enjoy racing here. I'm just going to keep doing my homework." The Red Bud track had some new sections this year, as the Supercross-style infield jumps and turns were rerouted and new obstacles were added, including a 100-foot- wide off-camber corner. Almost everyone liked the track, although passing was difficult at times. "I think it's a great track to ride, and it would be an awesome practice track," said Team Honda's Andrew Short. "I think the effort is definitely there from the pro- moters, too. The dirt is awesome. The only thing is that the new layout didn't quite turn out. You had to run the inside in every cor- ner, there was no reason to go all the way to the outside and go all of that extra distance, so it made it hard to pass." Ricky Carmichael likes Red Bud, too. With RC announcing he will only race a part-time schedule in 2007, many are wondering what tracks he will skip next year. He made it clear that he will be back at Red Bud next year. He's not as high on some other tracks. "I'll be honest, I hate Unadilla," Carmichael said. "There's a lot of rocks out there." There was some controversy over an alleged off-track maneuver by Mike Alessi off the start of moto two. Alessi lined up on the extreme inside gate, and he was accused of actually running off of the inside of the track and onto a patch of grass to avoid getting pinched off in the first turn. AMA Pro Racing reviewed the situation and chose not to hand out any penalties. Silly-season rumors have been exceptionally quiet so far in 2006. One new rumor hitting the circuit is that Brett Metcalfe may make a move to the Monster/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team to replace Grant Langston, who will be graduating to a 450 ride in 2007. While Langston was at one time rumored to stay with the team and spearhead a new 450 Kawasaki/Pro Circuit effort, word now is that the team will remain KX250F-based only for 2007. Red Bud in July normally means hot and humid weather, but the threat of rain kept a cloud cover over the track all weekend long. Rain finally did hit on Sunday morning and continued intermittently throughout the day, hitting especially hard during the second Lites-class moto. SoBe/Samsung Mobile's Joaquim Rodrigues made his return to action after missing the entire season so far due to a broken "tib and fib." "J-Rod's" mechanic, Chad Sanner, reports that his rider has been back on a bike for a month and is in awesome shape. At Red Bud he ran 14-17 for 17th overall. The Red Bud race was the second round of the Monster Energy/Kawasaki Triple Crown of Motocross. So far, Ricky Carmichael and Ryan Villopoto have won both rounds of the series in their classes, and if they can do it again at the third round of the series at Steel City in Delmont, Pennsyl- vania, on Labor Day Weekend, they can col- lect a sizable check: a sweep in the Lites equals a $10,000 bonus for Villopoto, and a sweep in the AMA Motocross class means a $30,000 bonus for Carmichael. Briefly... Continued from page 17 The only time Carmichael (4) wasn't out in front is when he fell in the second moto, handing the lead to Stewart (7). A few laps later, Carmichael gets it back with this inside pass on Stewart.
