CMC Spninq Classic Nationals South Round 4: l-S MX PaFk GORMAN, CA, MAY I4 It s been more rhan three decades srnce Marty Smith raced a ICHC u,"n,, but acquainEances wEre esrablished ,nd re-estab- lished at l-5 MX Park when the former l25cc National Champi- on brouSht his teenage son Ty'€r along to contest the 2fth.nnual MTA West/Racetech SprinS Classic Nadonals South Senes flnale. lE was Tyler's first-ever venture to a CMC day race, but he showed he wasn't a beSinner by jumping out to an immediate lead in the first l25cc Prollntermediate moto. The younger Smith has been a big help to Marty in recent years, helping wittr his dad s moto{ross schools around the .oufltry "He helps demonstrate te.hniques while I teach," said the senior Smith, who won his first l25cc €hampionship in 1972, the first year he rode for Honda. For thre€ laps, Tyler seemed in complet€ .ontrol of the lead, despite a terrilic battle 8oin8 on right behind him for runner-up honors among Pro rider l"lan Spencer and lfltermediates Tanner LanSham, Ricky Hemme and Cole McCIeary Suddenly, Tyler launched awkwardly f.om a iump and toElly lost it on his landinS and plummeted to the ground in a heap, jarrinE his shoulder and bloodyinS his nose. Smith and son soon pack€d up and made a trip to the hospital for a che.kup. Meanwhile, the l6'year-old Langham took control of the moto aboard his Hahm Motorspons,$r'BFyAmerican Suzuki and showed he was lhe [astest on this day, in most of his motos. He went on to Yyin both 2o-minure l25cc motos. and then added a viclory an the first 250cc Prollnterniediare moto before creating his own problems in the s€cond moto that cost him his second over.ll victory He was trailin8 lYan Gomez' Mom & Dad-backed Yamaha, and he needed to make the pass for the victory so he pLrshed hard and nearly lost it in a difficult, uphill right-hand sweeper that eventual,y claimed more than a doren riders all day. langham somehow saved a washout and was back on the lead€r's tail when he hit another spinout just before ahe white fla8, this time stalling rhe four, stroke, which refused to refire quickly. Lost ground plus lost time equals lost race. Temperamental four-srrokes that have sralled are a maior problem for rider. of any caliber, but one rider showed surprisinS maturity when he was faced with a simalar dilemma. DurinS his second Schoolboy moto, racin8 against the l25cc Open riders, Tyler Ruiz showed rare discipline when he fell after just havinS taken the lead from Armando Aguilar Somehow even while sprawled on the Eround, Ruiz managed to keep his hand clenched on the clutch, keeping the engine alive, while he regained his feet and remounted. He aaught back up on the last lap and shot his Plid'eities/Simpson,S€otvEvs Honda back into lirst and on to an eight-bikelength win! Not ever/thing was Sood for Ruiz on this day, however Alter winning the ,lrst l25cc Junior moto, Ruiz was trailing Teff VRM/ Deel Work/ODl Grips/^Weapon MxMotocr.nz-sponsored L an Mason's Honda in another tenacious fight for 6le over3ll. On the last lap, firee tums from the checkered ,lag, Ruiz hir a soft section as he closed in for a pass, lost I 0 lengths - and dle overall.
