to name
a few.
But the battle
for the overall would
come
down to two
riders,
Abbott
and Pearson.
Abbott started
out well
on Saturday,
easily
zeroing his check
and making
Sood
time
in the tests, Pearson
started
out tiSht
but
still man€ed tq
put ll seconds
between
himself and
Abboft
in the first
test. Abbott answered
by
beating Pearson
by 14 seconds
in the
next test and by one
second in the
third.
ln spite of losing
his
clutch sometime
after the third
test,
Pearson
came back
in the
fourth test,
beating
his Kawasaki
rival by
four sec-
onds.
As the
results came in
throughout
the
afternoon
and were calculated
and
post-
ed,
it looked like
Abbott
had taken
Saturday's
event
by five seconds.
But
there
was a
problem
with the scoring
in
one of
the special tests; the timin8
light at
the
finish of the second test
was knocked
off line,
possibly
by a rider
By the time
it
was
noticed and corrected,
many LOI
rid-
ers
had
passed.
When the
results were
posted
on the community-center
wall,
there were a lot of discrepancies.
The
manual records that backup
the
electron-
ic data-collection
system were
used to try
and sort it out.
Before everyone
went
back to
camp
for
the
night. it looked like-
ly that test
would be thrown
out. As
a
result, Abbott's
frve-second day-one
lead
be€ame
a nine-second deficit.
At the
riders' meeting
before the
start
on Sunday,
Gunny Claypool,
the
AMA referee for
the
qualifier
series,
mentioned
the
secood test scoring
issue
and told riders
that,
while they
were
on
course,
he would be
working
to sort
it out. ln addition
to Abbott
and
Pearson, many
riders started
the day
not
sure
where they stood, only
know-
ing they had to
put in their best
possi-
ble ride. Ultimately,
the
problems
were
more than could be
fixed. and belore
sion to disallow the
test's results
was
made final.
Out on
the course,
Pearson and
Abbott had
to
put
this out
of their minds,
focus on the day
and
ride their best.
Abbott, now doY/n
by nine
seconds,
picked
up two of them
on the
first test.
Then Pearson took
one back
in
the
sec-
ond test, five in the third
and one
more in
the fourth. They were
dead even
at 438
seconds
apiece
going into the
fifth and
final
test. But they wouldn't
know the
results
until later that day.
When the final
scores
were tallied. it was Pearson
taking
the win by
l5 seconds, Had the
question-
able
test been
allow to stand, there
would
