workin8 good all week. I keep crashing my Superbike, so I guess I'm making up for it a liftle bit in Supersport. I'm iust happy that l'm being consistent and l'm up here on the box. lt was another fun race with Jamie. He gave it to me a lirde bit in [turn] five, but it was still good to get the Hayden won the race in a record time of 25 minutes, 10.720 seconds, eclipsing his own mark from last year by 14 sec- onds. His average speed was 93.174 mph. Hayden's championship lead over HackinS is eight points, 74-55, after two of I I races- May sits third with 53 points. "lt didnt go as I planned.'' Hacking said. "l planned on turning around that second pla.e I had on the Superstock and pulling a win ofl I felt really confident going into the race." Hacking took the lead from Hayden on the fifth lap and held it until nearly the end. "l was iust waiting for the race to 8et into the lappers, and lgot into the lap- pers, and obviouslT you know, they iust didn't play to my way," he said. "l iust got screwed with them." Hacking said he thouSht he'd protect- ed his line from a Hayden attack, "But obviously not ti8ht enough," he pointed out. "He got in there and he got a little wide. and I followed him a.ound over here, and he got into the turn-flve area pretq/ wide, and I got underneath him and he squared it off real well. I mean, that bike turns really, really well. .lust barely touched there a liftle bit. lt was pretty close. From there on, I iust tried to stick on his rear wheel. I thought I had a pretty good shot at getting him back on the last lap. Going into turn two over here, he squeezed in between a lapper, and the lapper came right back down on top of me. At that point, I had to kind of turn in a little sharper than l'd been turn- ing in there. And I had to let go of the brakes. lhad to let it run wide. Then lget out there in the water- lt was a whole m€ss from there on. He got a big gap on me, and it wils over.'' May took advantage of the misfortune of Yoshimura Suzuki's Ben Spies to take third. Spies was running in third on the loth lap when he went out with an elec- trical issue on his Suzuki GSX-R600. "l feel like I Eot lucky today, for sure," May said- May said an unwise gearing chan8e put him off the pace for the race. "Roger and Jamie, Ben Spies - they were 8one," May said. May was a comfortable third until the end of the race, when Attack Kawasaki's Ben Attard anacked. The gap closed to t:nder a second on the l3th lap and con- tinued to shrink ro the checkered flag. "Ben was coming on me real quick," May said, "l was watching the splits. lt showed me he was picking offabout two- tenths a lap on me, Once we got near the end, the bike started workinS a liftle bet- ter where I could ride lt more comtort- ably out of control, I guess you would say. So ljust put my head down and said, 'There ain't no way he's Soing to pass me. l'm not going to let him get by me today.' liust pretty much held a defensive line, and the Pirelli tires were great and brought it home third." "[His first Supersport podium was] definitely a milestone for me," May said. "Getting on the box in Supersport is an accomplishment, for sure. I wanted to get it straight up. I wanted to beat Ben out- right today. We were pretty much right there with him all weekend, and then we worked backwards. But we'll take it. That's racing." Attard was only .216 of a second back in fourth. Teammate Damon Buckmaster was next, 13 seconds later, with Matsushima Perfqrmance's Danny Eslick nearly in his shadow. Soon after came Team l'44 EMGO Suzuki's Michael Barnes, nearly healed from the right-knee injuries he suffered in Daytona. Cl{ BatBER r{ororsPorrs PaRx Brnr NGHArtr, AraBAr,ra SUPERSPoRTT l. Rose.
