The vrc- tor,, Yamaha was hoping for in the Day- tona 200 came six weeks later. and about 560 miles northwest, at Barber l4otor- sports Park. On a beautifully sunlit day, Yamaha's lason Disalvo, who'd dominat- ed the pre-race hype for the 200 only to finish third, swept to a convincing win - no doubt rhe firsr of many. From his first Formula Xtreme pole position, Disalvo battled Erion Honda's Josh Hayes for more than half the race. Hayes had led the first five laps before the lead began changing hands. Starting on the sixth lap, the pair swapped back and 26 MAY3,2OO6 . CYCLE NEWS forth until DiSalvo made a definitive pass on the ninth lap and sped to victory "l knew I had a clear track once I got through turn one still in the lead," DiSalvo said after taking his first win in the class, and Yamaha s first in the 600cc FX for- mat. "l just tried to put it all toSether and remember where I was strong and every- thing, hit my marks, and put a couple of consistent 27s !:27 lapsl in there. Then I saw the gap started to build and knocked it back for the last couple of laps, and that was it." Disatuo completed the l7lap, 40-46- mile race in 25 minutes, 9.470 seconds, at an average speed of 93-251 mph. His mar- gin of victory was 6.707 seconds. The time was l4 seconds faster than last year's race, which was won by American Honda's Jake Zemke, but off the 2003 mark set by Yamaha's Jamie HackinS, when the FX class displacement was I 000cc. With the win, DiSalvo takes over the lead in the championship with 67 - three more than Hayes - with Aaron Goben third at 52. "l foughtJason [DiSalvo] off as long as I could,'' said Hayes, the Daytona runner- up. "lgave him everything I had. Our pace wasn't really that fast when I was out front. but lwas trying to ride smart. When he got me, I tried to make sure I got really good drives and used the horse- power to take advantage where I could and stay up there as long as I could." The 2005 Erion Honda CBR600RR is at the end of its development cycle, Hayes said, adding. "For us to find more speed, we're goiog to have to be really creative and come up with some new ideas on how to do that. And we're iust going to have to work really hard." Kurtis Roberts returned to AMA racing with a third-place finish. The formerAMA and MotoGP rider put in a podium appearance in the fiEt of two races for Team M4 EMGO Suzuki. Riding in place of the recoverinS Michael Elarnes (who rode Supersport only), Roberts went to third on the second lap and stayed there to the end. He kept the leaders in sight until the halfway mark, when his tare was shot and he had to slow the pace. "Kind of worked my tires a bit harder than I wanted to," Roberts said. "Kind of caught up to these guys a little bit, and they pulled me again. And it was just a never-ending battle, really. " Still, he achieved his goal of finishing on the podium on a new bike, new tires (Pirelli), and with a new team. "Sure, we could have got two positions higher, but Disalvo and Hayes, they were going for it today, and it's goinS to take a few more tesB and all that stuff if we wanted to run that pace today, I think," said Roberts, who will also race for the team next week at California Speedway. "Can't say enough about the way they were ridinS- Even myself, lhad to pass quite a few guys, it seemed like, at the very beginning.'' Aaron Goben was alone in fourth on the second Erion Honda, with Danny Eslick fifth on the lYatsushima Performance Suzuki. Eslick battled with Yamaha's Eric Bostrom until the l4th of l7 laps, when the fuel pump on Bostrom's R6 failed. "l just had a less-than-spectacular race,'' Bostrom said, "l couldn't get the bike stopped on the brakes. I think that I've got some things to figure out." Sixth place went to Heyser CycleA/Voodcraft's Eric Wood after a very entertaining three-way battle. Wood, who was lfth on the first lap, got the best of a fight with Rockwall Honda's Ryan Andrews, who placed seventh. and Stargel's Brian Stokes, who placed eighth on his Yamaha. MPT Performance's Blake Young took ninth from Ryan Elleby two laps from the end.
