bunched up, and Reed went back
intg
second.
"Eveq,thing
was
good
until I
got
hung
up behind the lappers," Carmichael
said.
"l
went on the inside, because there was
a wad of
people
on the
outside, and they
just
came to a stop.
I ran into them and
almost went down,
and then Chad
got
back by me."
Lapped riders were a factor again
when
Reed
was held up and unable to do
a triple.
lt was now Ca.michael's tum
to
rake advantage. and
he
did so,
retaking
the
runner-up
position
with
iust
two laps
to
8o.
Reed tried
desperately to find a way
back around Carmichael, but Carmichael
held him off to the flnish.
Carmichael's teammate
lvan Tedesco,
who had battled early on with
Wey
and
Byrne
before
breaking away,
ran
solo
in
fourth for the
second half of the
race,
while
Wey and
Byrne carried their f€ht
to the finish. On the final
lap, Byrne
tried a desperate
pass
on Wey, which
knocked both
riders down. Wey man-
aged to
get
up and
get
his bike
started
first, and
he rode on to
the finish line,
while
Byrne took longer to
get going.
Since both riders had
managed to keep
from being lapped,
they linished fifth
and sixth, respectively, despite
the
mishap. But
Wey was infuriated
by the
incident, which
iniured his thumb, and
after he crossed the
llnish line, he came
back and slid
his rear wheel into Byrne's
bike.
"l
made a few misekes
at the begin-
nin8,
and lvan and Byrne
got
by
me,
but
I was able to
make a clean
pass
and
get
Byrne back,"
Wey said.
"But
on the last
lap, Byrne took me out belore
I even
started
the turn. He tried that
on me
earlier,
and l'm not
going
let that stand,
l'm
going
remember
that."
"l
was
Soing
in
to block-pass him, but
lwasn't trying to take us both
out,"
Byrne said.
"lt
was the
last lap; he can't
expect
me to
iust
ride around behind
him. He's ahead of me
in
points,
and I
want
all the
poinrs
lcan
8er.
lcame in
the corner inside of him and he turned
down and
lwas already there.
we
hit
and we went
down."
Reed had to be encouraged
by his
progress from lasr week, considering
that he has been riding for over
three
weeks with level-three
shoulder separa-
tion.
yer
he wa5 rather businesslike
in
his
recap of the race.
"l
knew I had to
get
a
good
start, and
I
iust
concentrated on
that," Reed said.
"l
iust
tried
to
put
some
good
laps
together and ride my own race, but I felt
every lap
lkind
of
learned something
new and started
doinS sections that I
hadn't done all day
-
I
iust
kind
of rode
into a rhythm."
Because of his injury, Reed is almost
in the same boat as Stewart.
"l
had an
MRI on Monday, and I found
out some things that ldidn't want to
know," Reed said.
"But
lthouSht,
'Heck,
this
thing's not
going
to
get
any worse,
I'm
going
for it.'
lt hurts,
but
l'm not
going
to
give
up."
With four rounds to
go,
Carmichael
leads the
AMA series standings with 259
points,
Reed is
l0
points
back
in second
with 249,
and Stewart is in third with
239. In the
World
GP standings,
Stewart
pulled
to within three
points
of
Carmichael
for
the
lead in the champi-
onship standings,
286-283, with Reed in
third with 267.
