CMC Gold€n Stat€ S€riGs South Round 3: AV Motopl€x lrlt'ICASIER, CA, fEB, 5 M idway into rhe 2006 CMC Ft Racin&MPS I lcol.l€n Sare Narionals Soudt rounds. one might expect some riders !o be putting it on cruis€ control, but thi! round held at AV Moto- plex foatured vadous nail-bters, with many last]+ passes that scrambled the results. Seldom does the amallest race in iize produce one of the best races of the dar, but that's exactly what happened in the lone 20- minute 250cc Pro moto, which had only four starters. Nick l'1cconatry, makin8 his first CMC venture to Southern California from his home in Spol(ane, Washington, rode his 4S0F Honda to an early runaway, while a pair of Japanese veteran Yamaha riders duked rt out for second for two laps. Keniiro Tsuii survived the fierce fi8ht with Takeshi Koikeda, as the latter fell near th€ end of lap Nvo. Tsuji then tore after the leading AmericM, and for the next four laps they dugged it out like a pair of boxers in the ring - with the lead changing half a dozen timesl Eefore the halfu,.ay siSnal. though, Tsuii took command and maintained a comfortable advantage to the end. Mcconahy tried to pick up the pieces when the lg-year-old mbbed the hole$hot in the 20- minute l25cc Pro race as well, but a8ain, he still had to smell the exhaust of Tsuii's four-stroke Pro entry as Truiiwas leading everyone. For six of the I 2 laps, Mcconahy held back Rfln B€at's Honda before he and Be6t traded places. Key last-lap takeovers were a highlight of the day. After winning the first 5occ (7-8) moto, Ryan Surratt found himself chaain8 lYaxwell Tedder's Kawasaki in the second stanza, with both boys' fathers chee.ing on their son!. Papa l'latt Tedder iust shook his head when Surratt squeaked into the lead near rhe end. but Su.ract's dad. Willie. another former Pro race., was whooping it r.rp. "That's my babyl" he beamed. Paul Tyler's comeback drive came in the first 85cc Beginner moto, when he cauSht Adam Daniel by surprise for the victory. However, in the next moto, Oaniel put his Mom & Dad RacinS Suzuki in the lead again Bnd rebuked all oI Tyler's aatempts at a repeat aboard his Yamaha. Jason Potter, also of Spokane, stumbled once bur was still a Biant-killer when he swept the tough 25occ lntermedaate Iields twice. Earlier, he was rn contenlon for the l25cc Intermediate victory trailin8 So Cal dominator Travis Baker aboard his Yamaha when he crashed in second with less than two laps to go. He opted not to ride the second moto, giving Benny Breck the opportunity to take runner-uP on his Yamaha. Jake Canada won three classe6 again - $e 85cc ( l4- l6), 85cc Open and Supermini (lasses - bur was constantly badSered by Nrck Paluzi. the 85cc (12-l3l winner. ln che Superminis. Paluzzi twice got the holeshot, and he held off Canada to the end in the first outing, but he losr (he overall when he failed to do so again in the second stanza.
