when it looked like Ricky Carmichael's chances of
winning a fifth Supercross title were out the window the
AMA made
a surprising reversal of its ruling of last week that
penalized
the l'4akita Suzuki rider 25
points
for using fuel that
exceeded the allowable limit
of lead. So,
just
as quickly as he
was ousted, Carmichael was
back in the hunt, though six
points
down to 2004 Supercross
Champion Chad Reed.
But after runninS away with the victory at round nine
of
the series, held in the RCA Dome in lndianapolis - while
Team Yamaha's
Reed struggled to finish third and Team
(
a reality - and
even
the norm.
Kawasaki's
James
Stewart had to come from last
to finish second
-
Carmichael now
finds
himself,
in every
practical
sense, back in the driver's seat,
iust
one
point
behind Reed in the standings.
After nine rounds, Reed
heads up the leader-
board with l9l
points,
while Carmichael sits in
second
with 190.
Stewart, who is on the
outside
looking in, is in third, l7
points
behind Reed. But
don't etch any of that in
stone, and certainly
don't count Reed or Stewart out too soon,
either, because there
are still seven rounds left in
this
year's
wacky series, and we koow now that
"anythinS
can
happen."
With
all of the distractions and sideshows of
the last
two weeks, the best thing that the riders
