Author Don Emde, himself a former Daytona 200 winner and son of 1948 winner Floyd Emde, tells how the race evolved from the days of racing on the sands of Daytona Beach to the banks of the Daytona International Speedway. He was the only employee in 1967 when he started his Parts Unlimited motorcycle, snowmobile and related powersports distribution business at his house in Janesville, Wisconsin. The company grew continually through the years and when Fred retired from full-time business activities in the fall of 2021, LeMans Corporation was the largest privately-owned powersports distributing company in the world. Local competitions followed until he enlisted in the Army and put his experience to use in Europe during World War I. He became a successful motorcycle racer, rising to the level of National Champion in 1921. Despite serving for thirty years as a Pasadena, California motor patrol officer, he set numerous speed records through the 1920s and '30s at Daytona Beach, the Bonneville Salt Flats, and a stretch of public road near San Bernardino. Price: $20 + Shipping The Speed Kings The Rise and Fall of Motordrome Racing by Don Emde The Speed Kings begins in the late-1800s with bicycle racing, which led to two-wheel "Motor- Pacing." In the early 1900s, bicycle velodrome racing inspired the creation of high-banked, 360-degree versions for the piston-powered machines. The age of motordrome racing began and the public couldn't get enough. At first, Motordrome racing made the front pages of newspapers promoting the country's exciting and dangerous new sport.
