Any early hope polesitter
Fabio Quartararo (Monster
Energy Yamaha) harbored of a
decent result quickly vanished
as he was swamped by Bagnaia
and the Marquez brothers, Alex
leading Marc into turn one, with
Bezzecchi, Acosta and Franco
Morbidelli (VR46 Ducati) fol
-
lowing. Assen had been Bag-
naia territory in each of the past
three
years, and he had the clear
air up front he so craved dur-
ing Saturday's lackluster Sprint.
Could he make it tell?
The short
answer was no.
Having passed his brother at
the start of lap two, Marc kept
a watching brief over his team
-
mate before striking decisively
at the
GT chicane on lap five.
Surprisingly, it was Bezzecchi
who soon looked likeliest to
give him a race after a series of
beautifully executed moves on
Quartararo (lap one), Alex (lap
two) and Bagnaia (lap eight) at
the final chicane. Acosta had
made stellar progress, too, pass
-
ing Alex beautifully at turn five
the fourth
time around.
Once Bezzecchi was second,
Marc could have quite easily
rolled off, as Alex was on the
floor after attempting an inside
pass on Acosta at turn five. The
KTM rider leaned his compa
-
triot's way on the exit, brushing
Alex's
front brake, which sent
him down. Further around, Fer-
min Aldeguer capped a disas-
trous lap for Gresini by highsid-
ing out at turn 11, taking Joan
Mir (HRC Castr
ol) down and
forcing the hapless Quartararo
onto the grass.
