Faria perfect at Glen Helen Spdwy By M. Sober SAN BERNARDINO, CA, SEPT. 26 National Champion "Flyin' " Mike Faria added another chapter to his book of Cham pionships, putting together a maximum score of 15 points to win the California State Speedway Championships at Glen Helen Speedway. : The first round of heats finished in predictable fashion, with wins going to Faria, Scott Brant, Steve Lucero and Chris Manches ter. During the opening heat, Rob Pfeuing went down hard in turn four and had to retire with a possible broken collarbone. The second round of heats went much the same as the first, with Lucero overtaking the fast-gating Bart Bast and Faria besting Lance King. Brant had an easy time with Brent Werner and Bobby Hedden, while Manchester kept defending State Champion Bobby Scnwartz off the leader board by taking the last heat win. Faria ended Brant's perfect night in the opening heat of round three and Lucero matched Faria's score when he earned the win three heats later over Manchester. Schwartz opened up the fourth round of action by nabbing his first win. The second heat proved pivotal, as Brant won over Lucero, which moved them into a tie for the lead. After Bast polished off Andy Northrup, Faria erased Brant and Lucero's lead when he drove to his fourth-straight victory ahead of Manchester and Hedden. Round five opened up with Gary Ackroyd, who had only two points, winning the first Simpson sails at Echconnee MX By ׳Toni Antoni MACON, GA, SEPT. 27 Brad Simpson rode to two class wins at Echconnee MX's first race of the fall season. Pro Circuit/AXO/PJ1 -backed Simpson had no trouble in the 250cc B class, but had to work for the win in the 125cc B division. In the opening. 125cc B moto, Simpson nailed the holeshot with Jeff Sheiids and Danny Haynes on his rear wheel. Haynes made short work of Sheiids and by the halfway flags had pulled out in front. Haynes' lead was short-lived, as Simpson made a nice pass on the long downhill to take back the top position and motor to the win. Haynes finished second and Shawn Sewell worked up to third. In moto two, Simpson again led Haynes through turn one, and the two riders quickly distanced themselves from the field. Haynes stayed close but was unable to take the lead as Simpson led from start to finish. Some of the day's best racing came in the 125cc C class, which featured three-way battles for the wins in both motos. Kris Swaney used consistency to score the overall win by way of a 3-2 tally over Mardic Murphy's 1-4 and Tim Bruce's 5-1. heat. Hicks then won his second race of the meeting. In the next-to-last heat Faria started in lane four and used the outside to sweep around Schwartz and run away with his 15- point maximum intact. In the final heat of the night, Brant used a nice outside-inside combination move to steal the three points away from Manchester. Brant's win moved him ahead of Lucero and into second place overall. Foster fantastic at Firebird RR By Naomi Bourne Photo by W.J. Field________________ CHANDLER, AZ, SEPT. 19-20 Mark Foster set a new record lap time at Firebird International Raceway during the final weekend of AMA/CCS Southwest Region road racing for the season. Neo Oils/4M Racing/BK Racing-backed Foster set the record when he motored his '92 TZ250 to a victory in the Unlimited GP. From the green flag, Foster tailed Kye Gunn, waiting until the second half of the 18-lap race to take over the lead. Foster responded to a signal from his mechanic on lap 14, and finally executed the pass in turn 10. Foster was clocked at 1 minute 17.10 seconds, a full tenth better than the previous record. Rick Kirk and his Two Brothers Racing crew dropped in on the regional races so Kirk could qualify for Daytona's Honda CBR900RR Challenge Series. Riding a fully- prepped CBR900RR, Kirk robbed the $500 first-place Honda purse from a stunned Kye Gunn in the Unlimited Supersport class. Kirk rode during Saturday's GTO to get more familiar with the track, but it was horsepower down the straight that won the race for him. In lap three, Kirk and Gunn passed Dean Mizdal, and it was a match race from then on. Gunn was able to catch the leader in the back curves, but Kirk always pulled ahead down the straight. Don Canet beat a small grid of experts to take the first-place Suzuki Cup money in the Middleweight Supersport sprint. Only Canet and James Randolph were mounted on GSXR600s, and they had no trouble putting distance on the rest of the amateur-dominated field. Davis dazzling at Prairie Dogs GP By Ken Harvey, Jr. SAN BERNARDINO, CA, OCT. 4 Checkers M.C. member Terry Davis dusted off his bike to come out and best a full field of Seniors at the Prairie Dogs Grand Prix held at Glen Helen OHV Park. Nearly 400 riders showed up at the District 37 points-paying event which included classes for vintage and sidehack riders. The Senior, Super Senior and Women's classes rushed off the line split up by class with Richard Jackson, David Jenson, and Davis out in front of the first wave. Davis wasted little time and out-braked the field to grab the lead in the second turn. Riding like someone half his age, Davis started pulling on the field with only Jackson and Jenson able to keep him in sight on their open bikes. Back in the pack, Ron Dugan was making up for a terrible start. As Davis stretched his lead, Dugan was running into trouble passing TV Holmes. By the fourth lap, Dugan had worked past Jenson and was closing on Jackson. Lynn McGraw was holding on to an excellent starting position, keeping the Super Senior class lead over David Kersting. In the Women's class, Susan McWilliams was running away from the other women and putting away quite a few of the men in the process. Rhonda Alger was getting used to a borrowed bike and was having to contend with the charges of Amateur class rider Diana Jasperson. Still out in front, Davis was stretching his lead. After continual pressure from Dugan, Jackson lost second but held a comfortable cushion over the next Open class rider. By this stage in the race, Dugan stood little chance of catching Davis. The Super Senior race was all but a runaway. John Etcharf had reeled in Kersting and was looking for a good line to pass. As most riders seemed to slow a little, Etcharf started passing and moved up a quick two positions overall. Kersting was quick to follow and kept pressure on Etcharf. Davis was still charging at the end of the 45-minute race to take a convincing win on a three-year-old bike. Dugan kept up the pace for second overall. Jackson made it two for the checkers with a class in third overall position, followed by Super Senior winner Lynn McGraw. McWilliams was still out in front of the women, but getting dangerously close was Jasperson, until she tumbled and lost time. Stephanie Lezkus, Ame Wright and Heather McNabb were all left to fight over second place in the Amateur class. Jasperson got going again, only to crash again and break off her clutch lever. Jasperson was still able to keep up for the class win. Desert Viper's Letzkus took the second position and McNabb, riding her first grand prix, made a last lap pass on Wright for third.
