Kops cuffs Bridgeton TT By Grace Di Benedetto BRIDGETON, MI, SEPT. 13 Kip Kops overcame the disadvantage of riding an unfamiliar bike to win the 500cc A class at the Muskegon M.C.'s Michigan State TT Championship at Dan Raymond Park. Kops had earned the pole position for the start by virtue of his season point total, but many doubted that he would pull off the win when he had to borrow a motorcycle. Kops quieted the doubters when he grabbed the holeshot and led all the way to the checkered flag. He had no serious challengers until lap nine, when Lyle Barber wove through the traffic and pressed the leader. For the final three circuits, Barber tried every conceivable line to get around, but Kops held him off for the win. The 500cc B race had almost as many restarts as it did laps. Willie Berghuis jumped the light to cause the first restart, and was sent to the penalty line for his eagerness. After the next start, the race lasted for less than a lap before the red flag again waved when several riders went down over the turn-three jump. Restart number three made it seven laps before Berghuis and Jim Gibson collided and brought out another red flag. The fourth restart didn't make it to turn two before Mark Froelich and Russell McCloskey tangled with the hay bales. The final restart saw Doug Ferguson take the lead off the start and hold it for the remaining five laps of the race, with Karl Hesse finishing second and McCloskey working his way up through the field for third. Jaramia Becker took the point early in the 250cc class, with Chad Davis and Kops on his rear wheel over the jump. While Becker and Davis diced, Kops slid out in turn three and lost several places. The leading duo continued to battle until Davis slid out on lap four. With Davis out of contention for the win, motocross rider Matt Powers moved up to challenge the leading Becker for the lead. Powers made the pass over the jump, and held onto it despite lapped traffic. Powers scored the win, with Becker second. Results 50: 1. Henry Wiles (Yam); 2. Tom Link (Yam); 3. Bryan Smith (Yam); 4. Engstrom excels at Millville MX By Rolfe Otterness MILLVILLE, MN, SEPT. 27 Rob Engstrom enjoyed a successful day at John Martin's Spring Creek Park, winning five of six motos for two overall victories and one fourth place finish. Engstrom won all motos in the 17-24 A class and Open class and the first moto of 250cc A racing. The track was in good condition after some watering took care of a dust problem which developed in the early motos. Over 460 entries made it a long but successful day for this last motocross of the year at the Spring Creek track. Engstrom's open bike out-powered the competition to give him the lead in the first 1724־ A class moto. Chad Winecke latched onto second in the early going, and though he gradually fell back from Engstrom, he pulled away from the battle over third which involved Jarrod Fortune, Pat Donaho and Brandon Backes. By the end of the race, Engstrom won with a large lead over Winecke and Donaho wrested third from Fortune. Engstrom surged to the front in the second moto while Backes and Winecke argued over Second. Winecke took the position from Backes, but Backes passed him back in the sandwash. Winecke renewed his attack and Backes dropped off the pace after Winecke repassed him. A three-way scuffle over second developed with Winecke, Donaho and Chris Bense all in contention. Donaho took over just after the halfway mark and trailed the winner Engstrom at the flag. Lance Cunningham pulled a holeshot as the gate dropped on the Mini Junior class. He pulled away on the first lap to establish a lead and then cruised in for the win. Mike Kann started about fourth and passed Cory Huppert and Ryan Broughton on the first lap to grab second, but couldn't catch up to Cunningham. Broughton, Huppert and Erie Gerber battled for several laps over third, with Broughton securing the position at the flag. The second moto saw Cunningham run another strong moto to take the win with Kann a steady second. Broughton held third for much of the race, but Huppert took it away on the last lap. Reyes scores at Starwest sx By David Procida MORENO, VALLEY, CA, SEPT. 26 With over 25 125cc Beginners on the line, Mark Reyes had his work cut out for him during the final round of the Cycle World Winners Series at the Starwest Supercross Park. When the gate fell for moto one, Suzuki rider Tim Rush looked to have the holeshot but just before the apex of، the turn Jim Mangold put his Big Wheel KX105 right underneath him. With Mangold safely in front utter chaos followed as riders pushed and shoved for elbow room. Rush, meanwhile, managed to hold onto second. Eddie Baucom was next with Reyes holding off the screaming pack trying to crawl up his back. At the end of the first lap, Mangold had opened up a lead of a few bike lengths on the battle for second between Rush, Baucom and Reyes. The three riders had opened up a gap back to fifth-place David Cole. This was short-lived as Joel Nunnally, who had been working his way up from a mid-pack start, put a smooth pass on the Suzuki rider in the whoops. With Mangold increasing his lead at mid- moto and Rush alone in second, the battle was now for third where Baucom and Reyes were exchanging tire marks on each other's bikes and in the process began to reel in Rush. In an attempt to get away from Reyes, Baucom railed the outside line at the end of the straightaway and passed Rush for second. He was followed by Reyes, who dropped Baucom back to fourth. Rush wasn't happy about losing second and he grabbed a handful of throttle in a repass attempt. Unfortunately, there was loose soil in the corner he chose, which resulted in a crash for the Spring Valley resident. From the back of the pack, a hard-charging Brian Brown had moved his way up into the top five. Then, soaring over the scoring line combination double-tabletop, he flew by Reyes and closed on Rush, who had not only remounted quickly after his fall, but had caught and passed Reyes. On the white flag láp, Baucom had finally closed on Mangold's Big Wheel KX, but with one lap left Mangold was not about to surrender his moto-long lead. Reyes was also on the move, but he had an assist when Brown went down just before the scoring tower. With the checkered flag out for Mangold, the best Baucom was able to do was to close to within a bike length. Third went to Reyes, who had made use of the long back straight away and the superior horsepower of his quarter-liter Honda to get by Rush, who finished fourth. Rounding out the top five was Brown, who had charged back after his late-moto fall. When the gate fell for the start of moto two, Rush didn't let off the throttle until he was securely in the lead slot, with Reyes, John Bracamonte, Nunnally and Baucom in the lead pack. As the riders made their way over the jump, Reyes jumped his way over Rush and into the lead. A four-way battle for third saw Bracamonte, Nunnally, Daniel Lopez and Brown all trying to occupy the same slot. Coming off the triple, Brown flew by Lopez only to be repassed going into the following corner. Brown turned up the gas and passed Lopez on the next lap. He also closed on Nunnally, and after applying liberal dosages of pressure, forced him to bobble and lose not one but two positions, as Lopez followed Brown by. Bracamonte was Brown's next victim and then he quickly closed on Rush but before he had a chance to challenge the Suzuki pilot, Rush took himself out when he washed out in a corner.
