Thorwaldsen thrashes Fernley Vintage Motocross By Clay Light FERNLEY, NV, SEPT. 27 Richie Thorwaldson won the 125cc Expert class at the fifth round of the AHRMA-West Regional Vintage Motocross held at Fernley MX Park. Because of a long break in the schedule, many of the 225 riders present had not competed since June or July. Thorwaldson raced aboard a 1974 Honda Elsinore, and his only real competition in the class came from Brock Suter. Like all of the day's divisions, the class combined riders from all three levels, and ran in three waves. In both motos, Thorwaldson grabbed the lead and held it to the finish, with Suter on his tail. Billy Clem led a horde of amateurs across the line in third place in both outings. Jim Willis finished second amateur in both motos for second overall. In the same combined class, Novice-class rider Greg Kendrick did a credible job of staying with the amateurs, winning both motos for first overall in the 125cc Novice class. Local rider Tom Muto was the pre-race favorite in the large and highly-competitive Plus 40 Expert class, but San Francisco's Mike Mėnesini had ideas of his own. Mėnesini has come close to the winner's circle several times this season, and it was apparent that he wanted to finish on top. Maico-mounted Mėnesini finished both motos in front of the 34-rider field for the win. Muto rode his CZ to a 2- 2 moto score for second overall. Jim Keeton finished among the experts for the Amateur class overall. In the Plus 30 Expert class, Muto was out to avenge his runner-up finish in the Plus 40 race. Well over half the field dropped out of the race but Muto, again CZ-mounted, rode through the carnage for the overall win. Muto had troubles in the first moto, but his moto- two win was good enough to score him the overall victory. Riding an American Eagle, Clayton Ross finished in second place in the Expert division. In the 23-rider strong Plus 30 Amateur ranks, a major upset occurred when Kevin McRae held off the advances of David Dotson for the win. Dotson has won nearly every event this season, and topped the first moto. McRae's 21־ showing earned him the overall, though. Results 125 EX: 1. Richie Thorwaldson; 2. Brock Suter; 3. Dade City MX wins to Yoho By Kyle Myers DADE CITY, FL, SEPT. 26 Kenny Yoho captured the wins in the Open Money and 250cc B classes at round 16 of the Dade City Points Series, held at Dade City Raceway. When the gate dropped for the first Open Money moto, Vince DeVane blasted into the lead with Glenn Lofley, Ricky Hampshire, Yoho and Derek Youngblood in tow. Yoho passed Hampshire on the first lap with Youngblood following a lap later. De Vane, riding a 1993 Yamaha YZ250, motored away from the field while Lofley, Yoho, and Youngblood battled for second. Lofley bobbl«! and Yoho and Youngblood shot by. Yoho and Youngblood continued to battle, and Hampshire motored by Lofley. When the white flag came out, Lofley repassed Hamp shire. De Vane took the easy first moto victory, and Yoho just held off a charging Young blood. Lofley and Hampshire rounded out the top five. De Vane again jumped out to an early lead to start the second moto. Yoho, Hampshire and Brian Cruz followed. Youngblood passed Hampshire in the rockers, while Johnny Hudson slid by Cruz. DeVane started to pull away until he stalled his Yamaha and couldn't get it restarted until the field had gone by. Sky Racing/Oakley/Pro-Action/No Limit- backed Yoho now had the lead. De Vane began to work his way through the pack. De Vane quickly passed Cruz and Hudson in one swoop, while closing in on Hampshire. DeVane passed Hampshire, but was too far back to reel in Yoho or Youngblood. Young blood pressured Yoho until he fell with two laps to go. Yoho held on for the moto and overall wins, with Youngblood, DeVane, Hampshire and Hudson finishing behind. Yoho later won both motos over Hampshire and Hudson in the 250cc B class. Rand roosts Kenworthy MX By Susan Willian TROY, OH, SEPT. 20 Suzuki-mounted Greg Rand won the Light weight and Heavyweight A classes at Ken worthy MX Park's David Swingley/Doug Kramer Memorial Motocross. Organizers chose to run the track backwards, which made for unfamiliar obstacles for the riders. Blane Armbruster was the leader off the gate in moto one of the Lightweight A division. His lead was short-lived, as Chuck Reed quickly positioned himself in front, with Rand in third. Rand darted by Armbruster to move into second and Mark Musselman tried to take over third place, but Armbruster held his own. Meanwhile, Reed and Rand stretched out a cushion on the other riders as they fought for the front position. Rand made a charge at Reed, but went too high over a tabletop and lost some time. Reed didn't falter as Rand continued the pressure. Rand tripled through a section of jumps to gain a little time, but still couldn't get by. The pair continued to battle until Reed missed a gear, allowing Rand to get by, but Reed bounced back to hound Rand. By the white-flag lap, Rand began to pull away from Reed, and at the finish, Rand was the winner with a 20-yard lead over Reed. Rand was again the winner in moto two, and Reed claimed another second for second overall. Results_________________________________________________ 80 JR: 1. Nicholas Wey (Kaw); 2. Tresser tops at Lodi TT By Mindyz Mac LODI, CA, SEPT. 26 Andy Tresser pulled off an exciting Pro-Am win at the first scrambles race at Lodi Cycle Bowl. Danny McDonnell got the holeshot and led the first few laps of the main with Tresser, Rob Damron and Ben Bostrom in tow. Tresser put the pressure on McDonnell and turned the throttle up over the fourth turn jump and made his pass going into turn one. Tresser held his lead and rode hard to keep it with McDonell riding jusi as hard to take it back, but to no avail. The other positions changed throughout the race with Ben Bostrom finishing third and Tory Bostrom and Damron drag racing to the finish line with Tory Bostrom getting the fourth spot. It was Ben Bostrom taking an early lead heading into, and coming out of turn one just ahead of Matt Wait, Tory Bostrom and Rob Damron in the Open A main. Ben Bostrom pulled away from the pack as Wait and Tory Bostrom battled for the second place position. Tory Bostrom made his move going in and around the infamous tree turn, to take over the second position with Wait finishing in the third spot and Damron in the fourth. The Pee Wee Stock/Modified class was fun to watch as the bar-to-bar action was increased over the jumps and right-hand turns the riders weren't used to. Travis Foulger scored the victory just ahead of Nick Moore, who held off Greg Ross and Daniel Jenkins. Results_________________________________________________ P/W MOD STK: I. American Flyers top Blackhawk Farms Road Race By Sean P. Clarke SOUTH BELOIT, IL, SEPT. 26-27 The American Flyers team of Todd Harring ton and Bob Meister came out on top of the two-hour regional endurance race at Black hawk Farms Raceway. After a delay to allow the track to dry, the racers left the start under cloudy skies. Probst Brothers Racing's David Probst jumped out to the early lead, followed by Brian Lantz, who was simply using the time to put in some laps on the dry track. American Flyers' Harrington started poorly, but caught the leader by the fifth lap and took over the top spot. From that point on, the American Flyers team proceeded to pull away from the rest of the field. At the half-hour mark, a great battle developed between Lantz and Probst over second place. The two were swapping posi tions every lap, with Probst out-accelerating Lantz' smaller machine on the straights and Lantz out-braking Probst in turn one. This continued until the end of the first hour, by which time the American Flyers had a two- lap lead. At the pit stop, Dan Probst took over for brother David, and pulled away from Lantz, who had no pit crew or equipment. Lantz quickly made up most of the time he
