If you know anything about Laguna Seca, you know about Lee Moselle because he was really the driving force behind motorcycle racing at that track. Lee fought for every inch of new pavement, facility improvement and the basic expansion of racing here in America. I'm sure the Grand Prix would never have come to America without him. As executive director of SCRAMP, the administrative body at Laguna, Lee was straightforward and uncompromising with his goals, often bucking the system with great insight for the future of our sport. Personally, he was a real gentleman with an easy and accommodating way about him. His dry humor, quick wit and exceptional intelligence were a true delight. Road racing will miss him, possibly more than we realize. I certainly will. Keith Code Los Angeles, CA No dabs Just a note to thank you for the excellent coverage of the final round of the World Championship Observed Trials Series, the Trials des Nations, round seven of the U.S. National Championship Observed Trials Series, and the fine interview with Tommi Ahvala. We don't usually get all this trials coverage at once, so it is really appreciated. I feel the job done by Donn Maeda, as well as Michael Snyder, was superb. I had the pleasure of meeting Donn at the Watkins Glen events, being introduced to him by his brother, Jon, who I'm happy to call a good friend. Jon is the former editor of the southern California trials newsletter, Big Dab. This just proves that writing as well as riding talent runs strong in the Maeda family. After a short conversation with Donn, I think he was discovering (as did many first-time trails spectators) that there is more to motorcycle competition than just sitting on the seat and turning on the throttle. I'm inclined to believe that Donn, who I understand used to refer to his brother as a "trials wimp," now has a new appreciation for the sport of trials. I would also like to extend to Carl Peters and crew, organizers of the World round and the Trials des Nations, congratulations on a job very well done. Bob Miller Miller's Motorcycles San Luis Obispo, CA Thanks, L.R. I was at the Flat River Grand Prix in Missouri and the highlight of the day was to see Larry Roeseler skim over the long whoop section like it was a freeway. After the four-hour race, he handed out his gear, signed auto graphs and talked to everyone. It is refreshing to see fast guys take out the time for the little guys. Everyone looks forward to seeing Larry and his crew next year at the Flat River Grand Prix. Becky Lewis St. Louis, MO Oops! I regret that one of my sponsors was left out in my letter that was published last week. I would like to say thank you to Dublin Kawasaki & Suzuki and also to Doug Meyers for all the help and support that they have given to me. Doug and Dublin Kawasaki & Suzuki have always been behind me 100% when I did not have a factory ride. Rodney Smith Oakley, CA Godspeed, Dave I believe there is a very special bond between close motorcycle friends. It's a camaraderie that really seems to intensify the more Sunday afternoons you spend chasing each other on the trails. It's a combination of respect, trust and the pleasure of finding someone who enjoys the sport as much as you do. Unfortunately, we have lost a fellow rider to share that bond with. Dave Blakely passed away on October 1 due to injuries he sustained in a motorcycle accident involving other vehicles. Dave and I rode dual sport events together for the last few years, and recently he started riding enduros. The last couple of events we rode on the same minute. Dave zeroed his first check with me and he zeroed his last check with me. We rode hard together, we had fun together. He had so much fun, he won his class by 10 points. For those of you whc؛ didn't know 'Dave, he was easy to recognize: he was the guy with the big smile, riding two- up on a BMW in the toughest alternate section, saying how great the trail was and he wished there were two more miles just like it. Dave competed in MX, hare scram ble and enduro events. He also put on the Covered Bridge Challenge Dual Sport Ride in Terre Haute. Dave was a true enthusiast and was a joy to be around. He was a fun loving guy who lived his life with zest. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Mike Juif New Paris, IN Help! Labor Day 1992 saw the demise of yet another dirt track in the Northeast. When I started racing in the early 1970s, there were no less than 10 tracks running scrambles or short track in District 6 alone. Pine Grove, Pennsyl vania, was the site of one of the few remaining tracks that ran short track, but Labor Day they held their last race. That leaves only two dirt tracks, Piston Poppers in Coatsville and Trail-Way in Hanover. Our sport needs help! The cost of preparing a dirt track bike is astronom ical. The AMA must come up with a way to stop the spiraling cost of racing. If not, we will lose a sport that is truly American, a sport that has been a huge part of my life and I am sure a huge part of many others. Where will the next Parker or Carr come from if there are no tracks to learn on because of low rider turnout, because we can't afford to go racing anymore? My son is ready to begin racing, but I don't know if I can afford it. Please, AMA, help save our sport. Scott S.
