З Ж؛ 1992 , 21 O ctober 28 LOCAL EVENTS Mike Craig won the Denyer round of the MTEG GP Series and placed second in Las Vegas, extending his points lead to 26 with only one round remaining. MTEG Off-Road Championship Grand Prix Series_________________ Lewis licks Vegas Ultracross LAS VEGAS, NV, OCT. 3 T eam Noleen's Kyle Lewis scored his second Ultracross 250cc main event victory of the season at the Silver Bowl. Lewis finished in second in his heat race, but put everything together in the final to come from the eighth row and score the win. Lewis started from the seventh of eight rows, but was into fourth place by the second turn. By the third lap, Lewis had already moved into the lead. "Everyone went wide in the first turn," said Lewis. "I just hugged the inside line around the turn and down the next straight, and I passed about 10 guys." The top several riders all circulated the track in a tight bunch, but after the initial sorting-out, not much actual passing transpired. Mike Craig was running second behind Lewis, and tried several unconventional lines in an effort to get by the leader. Lewis held him off, however, and third-place Larry Brooks passed the Kawasaki Team Green rider to take over second place. "The track was stupid," said Craig. "There was just one line, and everyone was just following each other. I was the only one trying different lines so I could pass Lewis, and that's how Brooks got me." Brooks appeared to have the runner- up spot sewed up, but on the final lap, just yards from the finish, Brooks had a freak fall and let Craig, Scott Myers, Shaun Kalos and Lowell Thompson by. Brooks remounted and rode across the finish line, but had to settle for a disappointing sixth place. "I got up to second pretty easy," said Brooks. "I thought I had it (second place) for sure, but right at the end, I cased it on a little bump or something and crashed. I don't even really know what happened. Since we were all so close, a bunch of guys got by me when I crashed. I guess it ain't over 'til it's over!" Lewis cruised to the win ahead of Craig, Scott and Kalos. cm Results O/A: 1. Holley MTEG Off-Road Championship Grand Prix Series Craig reigns at Denver Ultracross By Jim Ober DENVER, CO, SEPT. 26 K awasaki Team Green's Mike Craig out-distanced his competi tion and won the 10-lap 250cc Ultracross feature at Mile High Stadium. Craig took the lead with six laps to go and held on despite a strong challenge by Yamaha factory rider Kyle Lewis with two laps to go. Honda rider Brent Smith started from the pole position, followed closely by Tony McVey, but Corey Sorensen passed them both to take the lead. Sorensen's race to glory was short-lived, as he crashed hard at the end of the first lap. Craig's teammate Gene Naumec then shot into the lead, with Craig and Yamaha's Jim Holley in close pursuit. Craig slipped by Naumec going into a hairpin turn, and in the chase, Naumec went down with three laps to go, injuring his left arm. Staying near the front of the pack, Lewis moved into second place with only two laps to go, followed by Shaun Kalos on his Yamaha. Lewis couldn't pass the wily Craig, and the top three positions remained the same until the checkered flag. Larry Brooks, who had been riding strong all year, placed a disappointing 10th. Craig was the season points leader going into the event, and came out with a 30-point lead over his nearest rival Lewis, with Brooks holding on to third. Despite Craig's large points lead, the championship is still up for grabs with two rounds remaining in the schedule. cn Results______________ O/A: 1. Michael Craig (Kaw); 2. Kyle Lewis (Yam); 3. CMC/Valvoline Trans-Cal Nationals North: Round 4_______________________ Gomm grabs gold at Prairie City MX By John Silva SACRAMENTO, CA, SEPT. 27 onsistency paid off for North County Yamaha/Fox Racing/ Lindemann Engineering/GP Racing-sponsored Pat Gomm at Prairie City OHV Park. Gomm earned the overall win in the 250cc Pro class with a pair of second-place finishes on the demanding track. Gomm also scored second overall in the 125cc Pro class behind CPE Racing-sponsored Scott Myers. The first 250cc Pro moto went to Scott Myers, with Gomm second. Myers has dominated the Pro class throughout the series, and was the odds-on favorite to score another overall win. When the gate fell for the second moto, however, Gomm had other ideas, and tucked in behind Rusty Holland to exit the first turn in second, while Myers was buried midpack. Jon Nelson and Michael Brandes followed, and the close racing kept the fans on their feet. Holland and Gomm carefully avoided any contact that might lead to a repeat of the previous round's collision. Myers was cutting through traffic, and by the late laps had moved up to third behind Holland and Gomm. Myers attempted to pass Gomm on the inside line approaching an uphill jump, but lost control and nearly threw it away. Myers' mistake gave a little breathing room to Holland and Gomm, and Myers ran out of time before he could better his third-place status. Gomm challenged Holland for the lead repeatedly in the final laps, pulling up beside the Suzuki several times, but he was never able to make the pass. Gomm knew that no heroics were necessary, as second place was good for the overall win. Holland scored the moto win at the checkered flag, followed by Gomm and Myers. Myers, Brandes and Gomm were the dominating riders in the 125cc Pro first round, but Mark Myers grabbed the holeshot in moto two. After dropping out of moto one, Greg Tierhiemer was second. Mark Myers held a narrow lead over Tierhiemer, but Scott Myers was closing in fast. Gomm was busy dicing with Tony McGrath and Scott McEl roy, and the top five riders soon had pulled far away from the rest of the pack. Near the halfway point of the race, Mark Myers' Honda lost power due to a broken exhaust pipe, and his lead dwindled to almost nothing. Tierhie mer wasted no time moving around the crippled Honda for the lead, as Scott Myers was now dangerously close in second. Gomm also moved around Mark Myers, but was too far behind the top two riders to have a chance of winning. Tierhiemer rode well in the lead, and held off Scott Myers for several laps. Eventually, Myers found an opening and flew past Tierhiemer. Myers cruised in for first in the moto and first overall. Gomm used his head, finishing third behind Tierhiemer and earning second overall with a 3-3 score. Next to the Pro classes, the closest competition was found in the Inter mediate ranks, and especially in the second 125cc Intermediate moto. Jimmy Pierce was first out of the gate, but was hounded right off the bat by Jake Windham, Derek Watkins and Mark Klauser. Pierce was forced to ride ■on tlie ragged edge due to the relentless pressure from behind. The pressure proved to be too much for Pierce, and he went down hard in front of the grandstand. Windham and Watkins maneuvered around the fallen bike, but Casey Johnson wasn't so lucky. Johnson was moving up to challenge the leaders, but collided with Pierce's Suzuki and could not continue. Pierce was shaken and cruised the rest of the race. The final lap found Watkins in first, Windham second and Klauser close in third. Windham had to settle for second at the flag behind Watkins, but that was good enough to earn him the overall win. Klauser's third place gave him second overall. cm Results 50 P/W: 1.
