Fifty years ago this week, Evel Knievel attempted his world-famous
"jump" across the Snake River in Twin Falls, Idaho. Knievel's rocket-
powered Skycycle didn't reach the other side, approximately 4000 feet
away. The drogue chute deployed prematurely as it departed the 100-
foot launch. Knievel was uninjured after landing 600 feet down into the
canyon. A crowd estimated at 50,000 to 70,000 came out to watch...
In conjunction with the jump festivities, Knievel hosted a $100,000 MX
race in Twin Falls. Pierre Karsmakers, Marty Tripes and Marty Smith
took large portions of the purse.
