Hickman Wins Dramatic IOM Superbike TT
P
eter Hickman (Monster Ener-
gy FHO Racing BMW) took a
dramatic victory in the 2024 Isle
of Man Superbike TT on Sunday,
June 2. The win marks Hickman's
14th TT triumph and puts him
equal with the late Mike Hail-
wood, widely regarded as one of
the finest riders of all time in TT
and Grand Prix competition.
However, it was a race that will
forever be the one that got away
for Michael Dunlop (MD Racing
Honda). Dunlop had earlier taken
victory in the first Supersport
TT on Saturday, May 31, a result
that equaled him with Uncle Joey
Dunlop on 26 TT wins. A win in
the Superbike TT would have
given him a new record of 27 TT
wins, and it was all looking good
with a near 25 second lead head-
ing into the lap four pit stops.
Dunlop came out of the pits
with a new rear tire and a new
visor on his Arai helmet, but
his sidepod came loose and
knocked the visor out of its guide
and Dunlop had to stop at the top
of Bray Hill and refit it.
Seconds ticked by and he lost
almost a minute in the process,
and he struggled to get his gloves
off and on and restart, eventually
rejoining the race in fourth place
and handing the lead to Honda's
Dean Harrison with Hickman 1.1
seconds behind in second and
Ducati's Davey Todd a further 10
seconds back in third.
Starting the final lap it had
changed again with Hickman now
leading Harrison by two seconds
with Todd in touch and only 4.7
seconds back. Hickman tightened
his grip of the race throughout the
lap and final lap speed of 135.534
mph, giving him a 5.8 second
victory over Todd with Harrison
completing the podium in third.
Dunlop was left to wonder what
might have been in fourth, his only
consolation being a new Super
-
bike lap record of 135.970 mph.
The battle for fifth went the
way of James Hillier (WTF Rac-
ing Honda), 2.8 seconds ahead
