massive 20-point gap over rival
Cooper Webb with one to go.
"Hunter was holding a really
good pace, and it's not like I was
getting held up," said Jett, who
contemplated playing it safe in
second and perhaps letting his
brother win his first 450cc main
event. "It did cross my mind
for most of it just to stay there,
but once I got a little closer, I
thought, 'It would be nice to get
a few extra points.' Just to have
an extra cushion for next week
-
end. It was cool to follow him. It
felt
like at home almost at The
Dogpound just logging laps. But
yeah, it definitely crossed my
mind a few times to just stay
behind."
Denver proved bountiful for
rider number 96, Hunter Law-
rence, as he grabbed his career-
best
finish with a second place
and put his family name in the
record books while doing so. The
second of the two Honda HRC
450cc-class rookies claimed an
impressive holeshot before tak
-
ing off with the early lead ahead
of
his little brother. It looked like
a training day for the Lawrence
boys, as the two led the field for
the first time this year. Hunter
eventually gave way, knowing
that Jett's championship still
needed every advantage.
"It's pretty easy to see I'm not
going to race him very hard,"
Hunter said. "The champion
-
ship's not about me right now.
I'll
have my time next year or
even next weekend. It was a
great night overall. It was cool
to lead some laps. The start
was good, too. That's something
we've been struggling to ex
-
ecute in the main events."
