High school motocross was the craze in Southern California in
the early 1970s, and we ran a photo from one of the night races on
the cover 50 years ago... We had a short preview of the upcoming
Daytona 200 and coverage of what we titled Arizona's toughest
enduro, the Mowry Mountain 100 Enduro. Dave Wood was the
overall winner... Our test bike of the week was the Kawasaki 500
Mach III H-1E.

LOOKING BACK I
We tested the massive 560cc single-cylinder four-stroke Can-Am
Sonic motocrosser, which was pictured on the cover of Cycle News
40 years ago. The Can-Am weighed 256 pounds and, of course, had
manual (left-side) kickstarting... Johnny O'Mara won the Atlanta
Supercross... Je- Ward and Goat Breker flew back to California from
the Atlanta Supercross right after the Saturday night race. Then, they
hitched a ride in a helicopter that took them straight to Spillway Cycle
Park in Santa Maria on Sunday, where they clinched their respective
class championships in the CMC Golden State Series.
