We tested a pair of Kawasaki Z-1s 50 years ago. One was a stocker and one was Yoshimura-fied, just like Yvon DuHamel's. The two bikes were pictured in action on the cover... We had coverage of the Barstow-To-Vegas desert race, which easily filled the 3000-rider entry limit. Mitch Mayes, on a Maico, and Jim Fishback, on a CZ, battled for the win the whole way. After three hours and 47 minutes of racing, Mayes took the win just 41 seconds ahead of Fishback. Scot Harden rolled across the finish line on a flat in third place... Roger DeCoster out-dueled Adolf Weil to win the Trans AMA MX at Livermore. YEARS AGO DECEMBER , P100 LOOKING BACK I We celebrated the return of Barstow-To-Vegas with a Dale Brown photo from the start of the iconic desert race. Husqvarna's Dan Smith took the win, but we wrote it as a victory for all motorcyclists. It was the first B-to-V race since 1974 after having been shut down due to environmental concerns. More than 1000 riders were allowed to start the 150-mile race that Smith completed in three and a half hours. Bruce Ogilvie took second place six minutes back. Randy Morales was third. Eddie Lawson finished on a Yamaha TT600... Ed Lojak wrapped up the AMA Hare Scrambles title at Loretta Lynn's. YEARS AGO DECEMBER , (Left) Jeremy McGrath won the Paris Bercy Supercross 30 years ago. (Right) We tested the BMW Montauk cruiser 20 years ago.
