A random photo of Doug Grant from Spillway Park was pictured on the cover of Cycle News 50 years ago... We had coverage of the Motocross des Nations from Wohlen, Switzerland. The Belgians took the win with team members Roger DeCoster, Sylvain Geboers, Jaak Van Velthoven and Raymond Heeren. Team USA only had three riders after Kawasaki chose not to send Brad Lackey, so Team USA did not have the luxury of a "throw-away" score. Still, Team USA, made up of Jim Pomeroy, Mike Hartwig and John DeSoto, placed a creditable fourth... The 25-lap Flat Track National was reduced to four laps due to severe dust. Spectators rioted. YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER , P134 LOOKING BACK I Freddie Spencer was pictured on the cover 40 years ago when he won the 500cc World Championship at Imola after a season-long battle with Kenny Roberts. Roberts won the race, but Spencer took the title by two points... Team USA won the Motocross of Nations, held in Angreau, Belgium, for the third consecutive year with riders Je‚ Ward, Mark Barnett, Broc Glover and David Bailey... Jimmy Filice won the Syracuse Mile... Wayne Rainey won the AMA Superbike National at Seattle. YEARS AGO SEPTEMBER , Freddie Spencer won the 500cc World Championship at Imola after a season-long battle with the title by two points... Team USA won the Motocross of Nations, held in Angreau, Belgium, for the third consecutive year with riders Jimmy Filice Superbike National at Seattle. (L-R) Je‚ Ward, Mark Barnett, Broc Glover and David Bailey won the MXdN in Belgium 40 years ago. Fifty years ago, Mark Brelsford led the Atlanta National, which was shortened to just four laps due to dusty conditions. Purse money was handed out but not points.
