matched by emerging superstar
Dallas Daniels after witnessing
the form of his teammate in the
lead-up to the main.
Making matters worse, Beach
got away in third, stuck behind
both Daniels and reigning Grand
National Champion Jared Mees,
at a slippery, one-lined track
where the sun hanging above the
Arizona desert was more than
a match for whatever efforts
organizers made to water down
the circuit.
The heat races saw few
successful overtakes and a
considerably greater number of
mistakes. Beach's hopes to add
to his TT legacy came under seri

ous threat when Daniels found a
way past Mees and attempted to
disappear while Beach was still
caught up behind the defending
class champ.
Ultimately, Beach turned off
his brain (he'd later explain,
"Growing up, I was told you
either had to be smart or dumb,
and I chose dumb") and repeat
-
edly sent it over the start-finish
tabletop jump and then charged
into turn one. The all-in combo
maneuver allowed him to fly
alongside and overhaul Mees,
do the same to Daniels a minute
later, and ultimately break Dan

iels' hope for a counterattack as
the minutes ticked away.
Still, as noted earlier, these
"easy" wins never come easy.
With three laps remaining,
Beach's machine started smok

ing. The problem got progres-
sively worse to the point that
there was question whether his
bike would make it to the check

SUPERTWINS
Former Parts Unlimited Singles
champ Kolby Carlile is still readjust-
ing in his return to premier-class
duty —especially when it comes
to hustling a big twin around a TT
course. While Carlile managed to
make a breakthrough late in the day
and secure the best result of his
season to date, it only came with
great effort. He said, "The day was
very frustrating. I haven't jumped
this bike, and I haven't jumped a
twin in a few years. The big tabletop
in the middle was tough for me. I
struggled all day. I talked to a few
people, and come main event time,
I was finally able to figure it out. I
was happy with how I rode. It's not
the greatest finish, but it's my best
finish this year, and it's something
to build on. I'm happy to get out of
here safe and healthy after how
much I struggled today."
