incredibly bummed."
Forsley's absence left Kacey
Martinez, Tarah Gieger, Maria
Forsberg and Laia Sanz to battle
for gold. Much like the Men's
main event, the ladies put on
quite a show.
By the second lap it looked as
though Gieger was going to run
away with the lead, but the Red
Bull Honda rider had a pretty
spectacular wreck in the rocks
that left her playing catch up.

JOHNNY CAMBELL TALKS LAIA SANZ
It was a mere three weeks prior
to the Summer X Games that twotime Global X gold medalist Laia
Sanz got an email from Johnny
Campbell – but one email was all it
took to get Sanz on a JCR Honda
at the Staples Center.
"I met Laia in the Dakar Rallye
this year (2013)," Campbell said.
"She was riding a Honda in Munich
and I saw an opportunity for my
company to get some exposure and
also to help her out so I contacted
her a few weeks ago. She said she
didn't have anything lined up.
She actually came over [to Los
Angeles] for the ESPY awards
a couple weeks ago – she was
nominated for female athlete of
the year for action sports, so we
talked about doing some riding
and training. It just so happened
flipping over the bars," Gieger
said. From there, she was able to
make up time by doubling through
some of the track's tricky rhythms
while every other rider opted to
stay closer to the ground. Gieger
was eventually able to put pressure on Laia Sanz, who had tak-
that the Baja Beach Bash was
the next week so I took her down
there. She schooled us all! There
was like 50 dudes on the ride and
she just rode circles around us –
wheelies around us!" Sanz fit right
into the JCR team – and in Johnny
Campbell's own home, where she
was a houseguest for two weeks
– and was thrilled to claim another
gold medal.
