Lawwill Leads
Harley-Davidson's Mert Lawwill (18) leads the
pack at the start of the Charity Newsies 10-Mile
National in Columbus, Ohio, in June of 1969. A
crowd of 25,000 fans watched Lawwill lead from
start to finish to win the AMA Grand National
that day. Among those giving chase in the photo
was defending AMA Grand National Champion
Gary Nixon (1). Other riders include Charles
Southgate (56), Duane Buchanan (39) Dusty
Coppage (32), Jack Forrester (76), Larry Darr
(94), Chuck Palmgren (38) and Bob Hinkle (40).
