We celebrated Halloween with a creepy cover in 1972, and we teased our readers with a test of the Honda 350 Four, which would run in the following issue... Rick Woods won the United States Speedway Championship at Costa Mesa, and we had full coverage of the night's racing... We covered Jim Fishback's win at the Ram's Hare & Hound in California City... We tested the Bultaco Matador Six Days Replica, which retailed for $900... Robert Hartman was the overall winner at the 400- mile Jackpine National Enduro. 50 Years Ago OCTOBER 31, 1972 P128 LOOKING BACK Honda's Jim Gibson was pictured on the Cycle News cover 40 years ago for winning the 125cc Pro class at the Trans-Cal final at Saddleback Park. Broc Glover won the 250cc class and Phil Larson the 500cc class... Yamaha revealed its 1983 off-road models, including the new IT490 which got a boost in displacement... BMW also took the wraps off its '83 models... Elmer Trett took top honors at the IDBA Drag Racing Championship Series final in Mississippi. 40 Years Ago NOVEMBER 3, 1982 40 40 40 mile Jackpine National Enduro. Rick Woods (left) and Mike Bast battle it out in Costa Mesa during the U.S. Speedway Championship 50 years ago. Woods went on to win the title away from Bast. Robbie Reynard (67) and Jeff Ward (6) rub elbows during the Kawasaki Race of Champions at Englishtown 30 years ago.
