30 Years Ago OCTOBER 7, 1992 Our 1993 Suzuki RM250 test bike was pictured in action on the cover 30 years ago... We reported that Senator Alan Cranston's California Desert Protection Act was all but dead after an eight-year battle with various coalition groups, all wanting to keep the Southern California deserts open for recreation... Jeff Ward (500cc) and Jeff Emig (125cc) won the outdoor National MX at Steel City... We had full coverage of the Steamboat Motorcycle Week from Colorado... Danny Hamel and Paul Ostbo teamed up and won the Las Vegas 300. Repsol Honda's Valentino Rossi wrapped up title number four in Rio and was featured on the cover of Cycle News 20 years ago... We announced that Glen Helen Raceway was going to host the Glen Helen $100,000 World Cup of Motocross as a sort of a replacement for the Motocross of Nations that was recently canceled. The race was supposed to have been held at Competition Park in San Jacinto, California, but, at the last moment, was rescheduled and relocated to Spain. Team USA did not attend... Barry Hawk won the GNCC High Point, but it was Rodney Smith who moved to the top of the championship leaderboard with two rounds left.
