in resurgent form at the start of the first WorldSSP race of the weekend. His luck would run out in the races, however. Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros Yamaha) scored his third straight win in WorldSSP by holding off another Yamaha rider Glenn van Straalen (EAB) in race one, after what were a final 12 laps of often tough action in the front. Championship leader Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Yamaha) was eventually third but was down the order for some time. The Kawasaki Puccetti Rac- ing duo of Can Oncu and Yari Montella were fourth and fifth, respectively, in a red-flagged race that saw Bahatthin Sofuoglu (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) and Kyle Smith (VFT Yamaha) collide. Sofuoglu lay prone trackside, bringing out the red flags and the race being called, with full points, after 12 laps. One-time convincing leader Caricasulo had sudden a techni- cal issue while leading and had to retire. Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) was sixth and best MV Agusta rider. Aegerter was well down the early Race Two order but he would come back to win in bi- zarre circumstances. First, early leader Caricasulo was passed by Baldassarri, and then the Ducati man ran off and crashed when he tried to get back to the front under braking. Then, with Aegerter showing amazing powers of recovery to get ahead of Baldassarri to lead, a final-lap showdown beckoned. "Balda" tried to cut back inside Aegerter on the brakes at turn 13, but only succeeded in losing the front. He got going again to finish fifth. Aegerter took an unlikely clear win, with determined hometown hero Jules Cluzel (GMT 94) second and Bulega third. An- other home rider Valentin Debise (GMT94) placed fourth, celebrat- ing like it was a win. Oncu took sixth place with a completely loose and broken seat unit after he was rammed from behind. From a narrowing gap to an extended one again, Aegerter leads Balda by 19 points, 286- 287. Bulega is third with 168. Gordon Ritchie WorldSBK Race One 1. Alvaro Bautista (Duc) 2.
