Saturday was Tomac's day to make up crucial ground in the championship hunt. He gave up the red plate at Unadilla but managed to retake it after a big win in moto one at Budds. The second race of the day was a different story, though. Tomac opted for the popular scoop tire in hopes of a good start and a repeat of the first moto. But the hard base at Budds Creek had other plans. The number-three didn't get the start he needed and found himself stuck out- side the top five for most of the race. We didn't see the "halfway heavyweight" that we normally do, where Tomac drops the hammer at the halfway mark and decimates the field en route to the lead. Instead, he salvaged a fifth and went 1-5 for second on the day. The points stayed close, too. Tomac came in one point behind but reclaims the red plate and now takes the lead by just one over Sexton. VOLUME 59 ISSUE 34 AUGUST 23, 2022 P65 BARCIA DQ'D Justin Barcia was disqualified from moto two for what appears to have been an overly aggressive pass/take- out on Dylan Ferrandis. As a result, Barcia was credited with 8-0 finishes that dropped Barcia to 14th overall. Ferrandis retired to the pits following the questionable incident. Briefly... CAIROLI'S BACK (KIND OF) A surprise entry at Budds Creek was Antonio Cairoli who made his return to the U.S. on the Red Bull KTM Team. He used Budds Creek for extra prep prior to Motocross des Nations. He will represent Italy in the prestigious race. Unfortunately for him, a fall resulted in a cracked bone in his hand. But the former World Cham- pion still managing 19-15 finishes. NEW KID Star Racing Yamaha hired Spanish rider Guillem Farres to fill in for the injured Nick Romano. The Spanish champion kept it in the top 10 with 6-13 finishes. No word yet on how many rounds he will contest in. HUNTER OR HUNTED It wasn't the best days for Hunter Lawrence, as he found himself on the ground and off the track in both motos. Two finishes outside the top five put him eighth and ninth for eighth overall. In the process, he dropped from second to third in the overall points standings. (Above) Anderson kept it consistent with 2-2 for his second career overall. (Below) Eli Tomac had flip- flop results with 1-5 scores.
