Thirty years ago, Belgian Jorge Jobe won the 500cc Motocross Grand Prix crown in
Roggenburg, Sweden, by just two points over Kurt Nichol. It was the closest finish to the
500cc World Championship since Roger DeCoster beat Willie Bauer in 1973 by also two
points. American Billy Liles finished third in the championship... In Brazil, Wayne Rainey
took the World Championship 500cc GP win to close within two points of
championship leader Mick Doohan... Raymond Roche won the World
Superbike round in Malaysia; Doug Polen still led the championship.
We pictured Nicky Hayden on the cover 20 years ago for winning
the AMA Superbike title at VIR... We reported the passing of
road racer Randy Renfrow who suffered a head injury when
he fell while navigating the stairs at his parents' home... We also
reported Jeremy McGrath signing a four-year contract with KTM...
Rich King won the Hagerstown Half-Mile... Colin Edwards and
teammate Daijiro Kato rode a Honda to victory at the Suzuka
8-Hour... Ryon Bell won the El Trial de Espana that was held at the
Donner Ski Ranch in Truckee, California.
