John McCowen and his famous four-legged friend Cookie, perhaps the
most famous moto pup of all time, were pictured in action on the cover of
Cycle News 50 years ago. The off-road-racing duo was featured in the
movie "On Any Sunday"... We tested the 1972 125cc Hodaka Wombat trail
bike and the 125cc Penton trials bike... Roger DeCoster won his home
500cc Grand Prix in Namur, Belgium. American Bill Clements competed
in Belgium in what was his first GP. He finished 17th... We also covered the
Swedish GP road race won by Giacomo Agostini... Barry Gerald won
the Santa Fe Short Track.

interviewed the American who was on the cusp of winning the 250cc
Motocross World Championship... The Speedway World Championship
was coming to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and we featured
a preview... Team Honda's Mike Baldwin won the AMA GNC/Winston
Pro Series road race round at Sears Point and clinched the F-1 title...
Kawasaki-mounted Jack Penton won the Speedsville National Enduro
in New York... We tested the 1982 Yamaha XS400RJ street bike.
