A photo from the Homewood (Illinois) Mile was featured on the cover of
Cycle News 50 years ago. BSA-mounted Dick Mann came away with the
victory, followed by Mark Brelsford and Rex Beauchamp... Dirt track
racing was going strong at Ascot Park, where Mike Haney won the 15-lap
Expert TT main event... We tested the $968 Kawasaki F-9 Bighorn, a
350cc enduro bike but also street-legal. We said it was more usable than a
Sunday-only machine... We covered the Prospectors Lazy Three Enduro in
California which was held at night.

LOOKING BACK
We featured racing action from Ponca City, one of the major amateur
motocross events at the time, on the cover 40 years ago. Paul Denis
(21) and Willie Surratt were pictured. Ron Lechien, Billy Liles, Buddy
Antunez and Colin Edwards were some of the big winners. Tragically,
one of the darkest days in motorcycle-racing history happened at Ponca
City when three racers, all three of Suzuki's top prospects—Bruce
Bunch, Kyle Fleming and Rick Hemme—were killed in a car-versus-
train accident while leaving the track area after the final day.
