effery Lowery has the pedigree any aspiring racer
would love to have. His amateur career was stellar, culminating in earning the prestigious
AMA Horizon Award. Now the
promising 15-year-old flat tracker from Newark, Ohio, is on the
verge of making that first plunge
from the kid's side of the pool to
the deep end where the big boys
and girls play.
Lowery scored the Horizon
award after scoring victories in
the 251cc-500cc DTX class and
the 450cc Modified classes.
Lowery is a good looking kid and
extremely athletic, but the one
thing that could be a deterrent
to his racing future is his size. Already at 15 he's nudging six-feet
and as his lean frame fills out as
he will not be a featherweight
racer by any stretch. Nevertheless, Lowery seems to have that
special gift on a flat track of supreme throttle control and savvy
racecraft that belies his young
age.
He also has one of the elite
motorcycle racers in America as
a mentor in Larry Pegram. Pegram has helped by training with
him and giving him valuable advice that should make that perilous transition to the pros a little
easier.
We caught up with Lowery at
the recently rained-out Lima National. He was on hand to see
