Grant and Smartop/MotoConcept's Mike Alessi. Villopoto got
an uncharacteristical bad start
and was back in twelfth. Grant,
who got off to another great
start, suddenly went down just a
few turns into the race, making
things a little easier on Dungey,
who quickly closed in on Stewart
for the lead.
The two battled for a few laps
until Dungey broke free of Stewart.
Villopoto, meanwhile, was now
up to fourth, but well back, and
Canard continued to close in on
Stewart, thinking that second
would get him the overall win if
he passed Stewart.
"I thought a 2-2 was better
than a 3-1, so I went for it," Canard later admitted.
The two put on an incredible
race in the closing laps,
passing each other several
times. At one point, Stewart nearly threw it away on
one of the track's steep
hills.
"I reverted back to
'Bubba' there for a lap or
two and was like 'what are
you doing, man?'" Stewart
said. "Now I know I still
