and Pechacek in second. Tieszen held down
third place.
Moto two began differently when Tieszen
grabbed the holeshol. Davidson, Jody Turk
and Samples followed. Samples quickly
picked off Turk and Davidson. A lapse of
concentration caused Tieszen to overshoot a
large sweeping turn, allowing Davidson and
Turk to slip past [or the second and third
positions. Pechacek was back in the pack after
a poor start. On the final lap, Tieszen took
a hard spill and Fisk slipped into fourth.
Pechacek pulled out all the stops, passing
David Rich, Coursey and Thornton to take
over fifth. Samples again took the win, with
Davidson second and Turk third. Samples
scored the overall, with Davidson the runnerup.

VICTORVILLE, CA, NOV. 28
Charlie "The Edge" Venegas held off the
formidable challenges of British League
regular Billy Hamill to capture the Fall
Classic Handicap main event at Speedway
USA.
First-year Promoter Gene Woods presented
what he hopes will become an annual event
at the San Bernardino County Fairgrounds
speedway facility. The diminutive high desert
oval played host to a very unique "all
handicap" racing format.
The second division speedway main event
win went to Joe Erhart, while the Junior
division victory was owned by Michael Hull.
Sidecars were also in attendance, and were
dominated· by the New Zealand duo of Peter
Lewis and Jamie Macy. The street legal Harley
main event was once again won by Jimmy
Raymond.
In the speedway Handicap final, six riders
competed for eight complete laps to determine
the event winner. Transferring througll a heat
and semi'final were 50-yard starters Charlie
Venegas, Billy Hamill, newly-crowned
National Speedway Champion Chris Manchester and Lance King. Situng 10 yards ahead
of this impressive group was Bobby Hedden.
Gary Ackroyd rounded out the field, occupying the 30-year line. As the tapes went up,
Venegas got away with one of his favorite
tricks, the major roller. Venegas managed. to
pass the start/finish line already ahead of
Hedden, and seriously moving in on Ackroyd.
Hamill also got off quick and was running
a qght inside line, following Venegas through
<;l quickly-dissolving short-yardage field.
Manchester and King got slower gates and
went about typically attacking the outside and '
inside lines, respectively. Ackroyd's stay in
,.front of the pack was short-lived. as Venegas
and Hamill passed him on the inside.
At the race's mid-point, Hamill found
