PRE-ENTRY FORM TAMPA AMATEUR SUPER"CROSS Sunday February 14, 1993 . TAMPA STADIUM EDITOR'S MEGAPHONE By Paul Carruthers very time December rolls around, the motocross guys in the office start handing out entry sheets for the Christmas Grand Prix at Carlsbad Raceway. They always han<;l me mine with a snicker and some underhanded , comments abou't my motocross riding skills. I know they only talk me into entering the race because they know I. will end up embarrassing myself. I go along with all of this, knowing I have the biggest mouth in the office and deserve everything they give me. It's sort of like my little Christmas present to them. It's my day of being humble. I generally just fill out the entry sheet and politely ask them what kind of bike they are going to get for me to ride. My next biggest problem is finding my one set of off-road riding gear. Did I wash the pants and jersey after last year's race? Are they in the trunk of the car I recently sold? Do they smell really bad? Fortunately, I found my riding gear clean and neatly folded in a cabinet in my garage, emitting only the smell of Tide laundry detergent. A wife is really an amazing thing. Once I get the riding-gear-thing sorted out, I start to think about training for the 45-minute race. The thing I'll never forget is the first of these races that I was' signed up for - the track featured endless whoop-de-doos and I spent the majority of my time .using the Lamaze breathing techniques I had learned with the birth of our first child. The more I E ~TRY I was~ the pants and jersey after last year's' race? Are they in the trunk of the car"1 recently sold? Do they . smell really bad? " think about training, the less of it I end up doing. Let's just say that this year I ended up thinking about it a lot. Going into the race, there are certain guys I know I don't have a chance of beating. I first rule out beating anybody who has raced a motocross bike at some point during the season. Then I dismiss the notion of beating anybody who has been testing motocross bikes in the past 12 months. Lastly, I give up on beating anybody who has spectated at a motocross race in the last year or so. That leaves one or two guys, out of a possible 10 or so. . One thing I like to do is shout orders to whoever is getting my bike prepared for the race. "Makesure the suspension's nof too harsh! And that thing better be warmed up when I show up on Sunday." Generally, my statements guarantee two things: A) the suspension will be set up for a rider with the skills of Jeff - Stanton and the weight of Marty Tripes and; B) the bike will be jetted poorly and stone cold. This year, though, was a little different. I felt I"had a man on staff that truly t cared about my. well being. Dorin t. Maeda, our resident dirt track man and \ hot shot motocrosser. Donn had taken me under his wing for thi!! race. He was -------{Continued on page 65 ADMISSION' Amateur Event Only.
