Baldwin battles at Starwest MX Brag bags Glen Helen GP win By David A. Procida By Scott Hoffman MORENO VALLEY, CA, NOV. 29 Todd Baldwin made.a victoriou comeback ride after a two-year layoff, scoring the win in the Vet ovice class at Starwest Supercross Park. When the gate fell for moLO one Rudy Chavez led the pack through the first turn. Hot on his heels Baldwin, Bill Melanson and am Ramirez were dicing for second place. As the riders sorted themselves out, Ramirez was on the gas and jumped past Melanson and 10 ed on Baldwin. Using an outside line in the whoops, Ramirez powered his YZ250 into econd place behind Chavez. The battle for fourth place had heated up as Melanson and Quent McCoy were dicin& back and forth before McCoy finally slipped by, but Melanson was fired up and stayed stuck to McCoy. Chavez was still out front, but that lead was dwindling quickly as Ramirez was on the gas. The Yamaha rider was only a few bike lengths back when Chavez took the white flag. Ramirez turned up the wick a bit more, but this proved to be his undoing as he went into a corner too hot and almost went down. He re overed, but lost valuable ground that he would not be able to make up before Chavez crossed the checkered. As the rider regrouped for the start of moLO two, Baldwin sat on the line envisioning the hole hol. This worked for the RM125 rider, who held his own against the bigger bikes and dove to the inside line, edging out Chavez for the lead. Baldwin led the pack through the esses, with Chavez, Dan McClintock and Jim Lacy pushing and shoving for position. The first casualty was Lacy who stalled his Honda in the whoop section. . After suffering from a bad start, Ramirez was on the gas and moving up through the pack, picking off riders at every opportunity. First he passed Lacy, then Melanson and McCoy. This moved Ramirez into third place behind Baldwin and Chavez. Ramirez closed on Chavez and for the next two laps pressured the Honda rider. It finally paid off as Ramirez made his move in the whoop section and nabbed second place. A the white flag came out for Baldwin, th re was a four·second gap back LO Ramirez, who was not alone in second. Ramirez was intent on catchin~ Baldwin, but Baldwin held his lead for the Win and the overall. A BERNARDINO, CA, NOV. 22 Bob Brag raced in the 100 rider Vet field to LOp the Novice class during the Wild Turkey Grand Prix, which was the fourth round of the Sponsorship Series at Glen Helen Cycle Park. Brad led the 33-rider field on the opening lap of the 45-minute race. Dave Si~on and Bill Kolkman trailed close behind in the second and third spots. The first rider to mount an early charge for the lead was Rick Chouinard, who reeled in and picked off thirdplace rider Kolkman, and then continued his charge LO grab the second spot away from Simon. As Chouinard started LO mix up positions, the batlle for the lead began to heat up. The race for the LOp spot was now between Brad, Chouinard and Simon. . By the halfway point Chouinard's continued pressure finally paid off as he moved into the lead spot. Brag, once demoted to the secnd spot, maintained his pace behind the leader. As the laps Slarted to wind down, the race for the lead was still up for grabs; Chouinard continued LO lead, but Brag and Simon were not far behind. With about 12 minutes remaining in the race, the LOp riders started to bunch up. Brag seized the moment to steal the lead .spot away from Chouinard. Chouinard kept the pressure on, but Brag was not about to let him slip by again. At the finish, Brag scored the win with Chouinard and Simon following in second and third places, respecti veIy.
