Stanton wins World Supercross Championship_ _ eff Stanton added yet another championship title to his colledion, this time the inaugural World Supercross Series Championship. The three-time Camel Supercross and two-time 250cc National MX Champion, Stanfon, clinched the title in the abbreviated series at the final round in Geneva, Switzerland, December 4. The Team Honda rider scored Friday night's win, with fellow American Mike Craig, on a Kawasaki, finishing second and earning second place in the series. Stanton tallied 75 points to Craig's 54. Third in the race was French Kawasaki rider Yann Guedard, while Americans Larry Brooks and 250cc MX World Champion Donny Schmit, both riding Yamahas, rounded out the top five. Stanton was scheduled to compete in a nonchampionship race at the same venue on Saturday but was a non-starter aft!'!r learning that his wife, Sarah, had been admitted to a Michigan hospital while he was en route to Switzerland. "1 called to tell her I won Friday night and she was in the hospital," said Stanton in a phone conversation on December 7. "She had a bad case of strep throat and an ear infection. I had to leave. But she's a lot better now." Suzuki-mounted Larry Ward earned the win on Saturday,and Craig 'was the runner-up. Rounding out the top five were Brooks, France's Mikael p,ichon, on a Honda, and American Cliff Palmer, on a KTM. The final World Championship Supercross Series point standings show Stanton on top with 75 points, Craig next with 54, then Kyle Lewis with 44; Stefan Everts 43 and Jeremy McGrath 38. The Geneva round of the World Supercross Serieshecame the series finale when the round planned fo!:.Genoa, Italy, on December 13, was canceled. The former Kawasaki Team Green rider will compete at most major off-road races. Steve Fletcher reports the theft of his bikes and gear from the Airport Holiday Inn in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on November 28. Doug Cook was the top money winner taking part in the Ducati Dealer Group Road Race Contingency Program. Over $3000 was awarded to riders who participated both at .Loudon and a Bridgehampton in the Production Twins class. The contingency program is supported exclusively by Ducati dealers. Most of the Ducati dealerships in the northeast are involved in the program. In addition to the dealers, Vanson Leathers also contributed. The 23rd Annual Florida Winter AMA Series will get underway on January 2-3 when the opening round of the fiveround series takes place at Gatorback Cycle Park in Gainesville. Subsequent rounds will take place over the next three weekends at Orlando MX Park, Dade City and Cocoa before the series concludes with its final round back at Gatorback. CHANGED: Kal-Gard, a manufacturer of coatings and lubricants, has changed its name to KG Industries after selling its aerospace division to E/M Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Great Lakes Chemical Corp. According to Joe Ardigo, president and CEO of KG Industries, the company will continue to manufacture and market coatings and lubricants for motorcycle and motorsports consumer applications. "All packaging and products will remain the same and keep the Kal-Gard name," Ardigo said.
