Dan Ashcraft (Hon) was the overall winner at the Casey Folk's U.S. Hare Scrambles Championships in Laughlin, Nevada, December 5. The runner-up was Greg Zitterkopf (KTM), with Scott Morris (Kaw), Johnny Campbell (Hon) and Paul Pitts (Suz) rounding out the top five. Lucky Strike SuzuKi recently completed a test session at Eastern Creek in Australia, the site of the opening round of the 1993 World Championship Road Race Series. Texan Kevin Schwantz lapped at one-minute, 31.3-seconds on the Suzuki while his new teammate Alexandre Barros was clocked at 1:32.0. Rothmans Honda's Michael Doohan qualified on the pole for last year's GP at Eastern Creek with a 1:30.736 while his fastest lap in the race was a 1:31.411. Suzuki's new '250cc recruit John' Kocinski was under the 250cc lap record, lapping the circuit in 1:33.8. Helmut Bradl won the pole l?osition at last year's GP with a 1:33.980, while the fastest lap in the race was recorded by Carlos Cardus at 1:34.797. Road race tuner Kel Carruthers recently returned from Barcelona, Spain, where he agreed to a contract with Silo Pons to run Pons' new 250cc Grand Prix team. The Australian will be the crew chief on the new team which features Spaniard Alberto Puig on factory Honda NSR250s. Carruthers has hired the two French mechanics, Gilles Bigot and Christophe Leonce, who worked with him ~he past two years on Carlos Cardus' Repsol Honda team. Wayne Rainey will again field an Otsuka Electronics-backed team in the AMA 250cc Grand Prix Series in 1993, with 1991 250cc National Champion Jimmy Filice riding the team's Yamaha TZ250. The team will be run by former AMA Grand National Champion Bubba Shobert. "Otsuka wants to win a championship and we think Jimbo (Filice) is the guy to do it," Rainey said. "Little Kenny (Roberts) is going to Spain, so that opened up the spot for Jimbo." David Bailey put his property in Virginia up for sale and the top bidder at a recent auction was hIs uncle, Bob Bailey. The property includes the Lake Sugar Tree MX track. Former racer Bob Bailey is the owner of Movie Movers, a transportation company that serves the film industry. According to Gary Bailey, who lives on the property, the facility will continue to host motorsports events. "Bob has renamed the property and it's now Lake Sugar Tree Motorsports Park," said Gary, who added that he will continue to conduct MX schools there. The Nevada Rally will take place from August 20-29, with headquarters at the Excalibur Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. A minimum $25,000 purse will be offered, with $5000 going to the winner. Best in the Desert's Casey Folks has been hired to layout the course and direct the event, which is expected to d,raw riders from Europe, South America, North America, Central America, Australia and Asia. In our coverage of the final round of the AHRMA Vintage Iron National MX Series in the November 18 issue, the fact that Vintage Iron of Fresno, California, supplied motorcycles to Past Masters race participants John DeSoto, Don Rickman and Jeff Smith was inadvertently omitted from the report. Vintage Iron's Rick Doughty also helped get many of the Past Masters to the event from around the world. According to sources in Europe, promoters of the Dutch Grand Prix in Assen, Holland, have reached an agreement with Two Wheel Promotions and Dorna to host a round of the World Championship Road Race Series in 1993. The race will likely be held on June 26, with the Grand Prix of Europe moving to a date in July. Also, sources say the proposed Canadian GP is doubtful for 1993, though it is likely to become a reality in '94. A new GP calendar is expected to be released prior to Christmas. Motorcyclist magazine feature editor Nick Ienatsch set a new 250cc lap record at Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond, California, on November IS, clocking a one-minute, 26.10-second lap to break Donnie Greene's record of 1:26.4 set in the WERA Pto Series race held in April. Ienatsch was riding the Steve Biganskituned Del Amo Yamaha that was raced this season by Robbie Petersen. TravelCraft, the Corte Madera, California-based travel agency, has announced that its 3rd Annual Grand Prix of Spain Tour will depart the u.s. on April 26 and return on May 3. The tour will take participants - limited to 20 - to the Spanish GP in Jerez and includes airfare, rental car, breakfast daily, three nights in the old city of Cadiz and three nights at the beach resort of Rota; and grandstand tickets. AMA Vice President Dick Maxwell extended his California visit after the AMA Professional Awards Banquet to attend a California Superbike School two-day session at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey, California, on November 23-24. According to instructors, Maxwell made impressive progress in enhancing his riding skills. The San Diego Automotive Museum will feature motorcycles during a special three-day program, January 22-24, conducted by the San Diego Antique M.e. More than 50 special interest bikes \Yill be featured on the main floor of the southern California museum, stationed around the current Route 66 exhibit.
