~ ~ LOCAL EVENTS • Burkholders blast Timonium Indoor Short Track ,.. By Len Breech Jeff Parks (21) chased Tony Bruemmer in moto one of Carlsbad's Vet Beginner class. Mark Burkholder (62) passed Joe White (behind) to win the ~ division at Timonium. nMONlUM, MD, NOV. 21 Mark and Steve Burkholder scored on the same night, at the Timonium Indoor Short Track Series' next-to-last race at the Timonium Fairgrounds. . Making his second and last start of the series, White led Mark Burkholder, Tony Parris and Rob Smith out of the second-turn traffic jam in the 360cc final. White held the lead until just past the halfway flags, when Burkholder slipped under him going into the first tum. White spun out comin~ off the second turn with three laps left, while Smith guessed the better line and took over second place. The win moved Burkholder into second place in points behind Rich Rowe, who had crashed in his heat and failed to qualify. Paul Crumling led Steve Burkholder, Scott Saunders, Steve Heiser and Rodn~ Farris for the opening laps of the 250cc Pro final. Farris secured fourth on the fifth lap, while Burkholder bided his time until they entered the first turn two laps from the end. Burkholder made the pass and stayed ahead for the win. Larry Sweeten got under Taylor White for the lead in the 250cc class as they came off the second turn. Tom Majeski collided with another rider at the start. Majeski remounted a couple of laps down and then the fun started. The collision had punctured a hole in his clutch cover, and he was spraying a stream of oil on the concrete surface. When several riders went down over a couple of laps, the red flag came out, and the race was restored after the track had been cleaned. A single-file five-lap sprint was used, and Sweeten held on to the lead for the win over Dan Reichert and Mike Keane. In the 125cc race, Ken Coolbeth and Chris Hathaway took advantage of being the only rider on the front lin~, leading th~ pack out of the.second turn WIth Brett Fnedel, Paul Lynch and Mitch Owen trailing. Coolbeth steadily pulled away, while Hathaway tangled with a lapped rider on the 10th circuit, losing a lap. Owen got by Lynch in the confusion, but Lynch battled him for the remainder of the race for third. Coolbeth nabbed the easy win. llesults 50: I. Cory Hormeo (M·M); 2. Jake Johnson (Hon); ,. Mall . Moto two was a little tougher, as he stalled his bike on the line and hal;!. to play catchup. Joe Stancato took the early lead with Harold Lindsey in tow, followed by a determined Baker. By lap three Baker haq moved past Lindsey and set his sights on Stanca~o. A half-lap later Baker was hammering Stancato, and he made the pass and held on to the lead for his first win at Hollister in the class. Aaron Baker met up with a hay bale in the first turn in moto one of the 80cc Beginner class, and found himself in dead last. He then proceeded to pick off at least three riders per lap, and by the midpoint had taken over the lead, which he stretched to over 10 seconds. Moto two was a Baker runaway, as he took the lead right from the gate and styled his way to his first-ever overall win at Hollister. In the 125cc Beginner class, Brad Pellin put together a 2-3 score to take the overall, while first-moto winner Richard Fajardo could only manage a sixth in moto two. Dan Malone overcame a crash and 20th-place. finish in moto one to win moto two, but he was out of the top 10 when the points were tallied. In the 500cc Beginner class, Eric Murdaugh hung in there for the overall with a 4-3 combination. Roy Reime and Ken Porter traded moto wins, but a poor finish in the other motos kept-them out of the winner's circle. llesults 26 125 BEG: I. Brad Pellin (Kaw); 2. Riclwd Fajardo (Suz); 5. CARLSBAD, CA, NOV. 21 Honda-mounted Dan Smith pulled a comefrom-behind victory in moto one and dominated moto two to clinch the victory in the hotly-eontested Vet Beginner class, at the Racing Enterprises-promoted Saturday MX at Carlsbad Raceway. Scott Lee Ball led the way at the start of the first moto with Kirk Chapman, and Jeff Parks in tow. Ball began to have trouble with the slippery early morning conditions, and began dropping back early. Chapman took command and led Parks and Tony Bruemmer in the opening laps. Smith was on the move after a poor start and by the halfway point had forced his way around Bruemmer for third. Parks was the next victim, as Smith slid by with relative ease. As Smith began slowly reeling in Chapman, time was running out. With only two laps remaining, Smith put the moves on Chapman for the lead: Smith went on to the finish clean, ahead of Chapman, Bruemmer, and Parks. In moto two, Smith would have none of the come from behind action, as he railed through the first turn with the holeshot. Max Galliger found himself in the number two position, followed by Parks and OJapman. Parks was on the gas and disposed of Galliger, but was unable to shake the Kawasaki rider. As the two argued over second, they lost s~ht of Smith, who was out for a Saturday nde to the finish. Smith collected the overall, followed by Parks, OJapman and GalliF' In the always-eompetitive Pro class, It was local favorite and track expert Tony Amaradio taking the win with a spectacular second moto victory. Bader Manneh paid a return visit to his hometown track after spending' the last few seasons in Europe: Rod Hunt had the hot clutch hand at the start of the first moto, followed by Paul Winn, Manneh, and Ama- radio. The Pro class is open to any size motorcycle, and Manneh was quickly up to the front on his mysterious, all-black CR250 Honda. Tucking in his wake was Amaradio on his Dirt SquirtlThor-backed Kawasaki KX125. Soon Manneh and Amaradio were gone from the rest of the field. Amaradio stalked Manneh, looking for an opportunity to pass. Amaradio tried to dive to the inside in a tight hairpin turn, but Manneh closed the door on him and knocked Amaradio to the ground. Manneh paused briefly to ensure that Amaradio was alright, then took off. Amaradio recovered, but his clutch lever was damaged and this thwarted aqy serious challenge. Manneh holeshot moto two with Amaradio ri~ht behind and the stage was set. On the third lap, Amaradio railed around Manneh for the lead. Once out in front, Amaradio lit the afterburners and was gone. Manneh held on for second, with Wino clinching third. ''I'm returning from a broken arm," said Manneh. ''I'll ride the first couple of supercross races and then it's back to Europe for the grands prix." Results 80 INT: I. Andy Harrington (Suz). 125 BEG: I. Bnan Sadler (Kaw); 2. Bryan OnItine (Kaw); 5. Leach brothers bomb Salem AX By Deanna Holbrook SALEM, OR, NOV. 2()'21 Ryan Leach broughl down the house Friday night with his perfect two moto wins in the Before The Hill class against tough competitor and brother Roby Leach at the Salem Arenacross. Suzuki/AXO/Yokohama/Cycle Country/ Albany Supercross/Gran Prix Cycle-backed Ryan Leach got the holeshol in moto one and never looked back, grabbing the moto win. Moto lWO saw Roby Leach jump into the lead with the holeshot and Ryan Leach hot on his tail and trying lO pass. Roby manhandled his powerful500cc Honda as if riding a 125cc through the tight course of the arena, while Ryan continued to bang bars at every corner, trying to find a hole. Ryan Leach made his pass on the last turn before the checkered flag, posting a I-I score for the overall. Roby Leach finished in second overall. Race action continued to Sleam in the Pro class with Ryan Hageman and Mike Bell showing the true meaning of bar-banging racing in both motos. Moto one saw Hageman get the holeshot and pull away, with Bell having to settle (or second place. In moto two Bell jumped OUl to the front only to have Hageman challenge him. Side by side they battled through six turns, bUl Bell finally made a desperate dive into a tig1:).t right-hander to take the lead. Bell had the win wilhin his grasp, when his front wheel washed out in a berm and he went down, allowing Hageman to capture the overall. Results FRIDAY 50: I. Ryan Barnes (Yam); 2.
