Nelson nasty at PITS Turkey Trial By Don Williams AUBURN, CA, NOV. 22 Fantic-mounted Mark Nelson Overcame three inconsistent loops in the muddy hills above the American River to beat out Tim Rust in the Novice Advanced 31-34 class at the PITSsanctioned Turkey Trial. . Rain fell from Saturday night until start time, turning many of the carefully designed sections into impossibly-slick traps. The uncertain conditions led to wildly 'varying scores for .the riders. Rust, riding a Fantic, opened up a threepoint lead over Nelson, who led Ron'Simpson by five on the first trip around the IO-section loop. On the second circuit, after the sections became thoroughly covered with mud, Rust -collapsed with a 20-point loop, dropping to third behind Nelson and Simpson. It was Nelson's and Simpson's turn to wallow in the mud on the last loop. Nelson began the circuit with a 12-point advantage over Rust, but fives on sections two, six and seven erased virtually all of his advantage. Cleans on the final two sections were enough for Nelson to hold onto his slim lead and beat Rust at the finish. Simpson had two fives on the last loop, helping to knock him down to the show position.
