lapped tra££ic. With this daring move he
pulled into second behind Pinkstaff at the
finish.
In the Formula Two class, Joe Pittman was
holding off Bruce Lind and Mike Sullivan
by the end of the first lap. Sullivan took
advantage of traffic to pass 45-year-old Lind
in lap three, but Lind kept nipping at his
heels as they both fought lO reel Pittman in.
Pittman was smoking lO stay ahead. Sullivan
and Lind also picked up the pace, but were
unable to pass before the finish flag.
Rain began to fall for the 600cc Superbike
class. Steve Dahlstrom's gamble to change lO
rain tires earned him first position early in
the race. His heavily modified FZR600quickly
pulled a healthy lead on Paul Hopper and
Simon Bell. The mixture of high horsepower
racing and heavy rain made for some exciting
moves, with places changing among the wet
leaves and water of the back straight. Matthew
Brown slid into fourth, hotly pursued by Tim
Healey. Healey was pressed hard by Ward
Rogers who was on a very twitchy 1974 twostroke 750cc Kawasaki. Despite the unpredictable handling, Rogers dove past Healey in
heavy rain lO take fifth.
By this time it was easy to spot the bikes
on rain tires; production rubber was sliding
everywhere as the bade for fourth lO sixth
heated up. Rogers, unfazed by the bucking
of his machine, was soon in fourth place.
Healey drafted amidst rooster tails of water
to pass Brown along the front straight, only
to drop back again into the curves. Dahlstrom,
who was never seriously threatened throughout the race, maintained his lead lO a wet first
place.

Dreyer dazzling at Huron MX
By Roy Knight
HURON, CA, NOV. 14-15
Norm Dreyer of the Over The Hill Gang's
Sierra chapter overcame some tough competition to earn the overall victory in the highlycompetitive Beginner class at the OTHG Fall
National held at Huron Cycle Park.
In the first moto of the two-day, four-molO
event, the Sierra chapter's Ronald Hays shot
into the lead followed by North chapter's Steve
Todd and Mark Oliverez. By lap two, Dreyer,
who had been running fourth, made his way.
up into the lead only to lose it again lo Hays
two laps later. Oliverez was the next rider to
try his hand at the lead which he held until
the unrelenting Hays retook it. At the finish
it was Hays followed by Dreyer, Oliverez and
Todd.
Moto twO was somewhat less eventful as
Dreyer holes.hot everyone and maintained the
lead lo the checkered flag. Oliverez and Hays
battled back and forth for the second spot,
with Hays eventually taking it while Oliverez
went down late in the race, aggravating an
already slightly tweaked back. This knocked
the Honda rider out of the running while
Todd moved up from a mediocre start lo claim
third.
The first of Sunday's two motos had Todd
charging into the lead with Dreyer hot on his
trail and Hays not far behind. By lap two,
Dreyer had taken over the lead which he had
no trouble holding on to. This left Todd to
fend off a hard-charging Hays as the battle
over second place heated up. Todd injured
his shoulder three weeks earlier at the South
National in a hard crash and was still feeling
the effects. He explained that it took everything he had to maintain full control of his
Suzuki during the race. Hays stayed glued lo
Todd's rear fenlter and dogged him every inch
of the way. About midway through the race,
Hays made his move when he saw an opening
as the two raced across the long whoop section.
But Todd quickly moved to protect his line
and effectively closed the door on Hays, 'who
then did a quick off-the-track excursion,
letting Sierra member Tim Hagberg by. As
the 20-minute moto drew to an end, Hays was
again back in third and trying everything he
knew to get around the tiring Suzuki rider.
But Todd refused to give up and followed
Dreyer past the checkered flag, while Hays
had to settle for third. Hagberg hung on to
fourth while the orth's Brett Alcala took
fifth.
In the fourth and final moLO, it was guest
rider Chris Searle who bolted into the lead
with Todd, Hagberg, and Hays in hot pursuit.
Todd and Hagberg were neck-and-neck as
they disappeared into the back section of the
LTack. When they reappeared it was Hagberg
now in second and Todd third. By the halfway
point, Searle has faded back LO fifth as
Hagberg locked onto the lead. Todd again
managed LO hold onto second, while Dreyer
found himself in third after Hays went down.
The top three finished in that order, with
Alacala and South chapter's Jay McLey
rounding out the top five. When the four moto
scores were combined, Dreyer came out the
clear winner with two firsts to his credit.
Todd's 4-3-2-2 scores proved that consistency
counts, as he earned second overall for the
weekend. Hays earned third despite his fourth
moto mishap while Ha~berg and Alcala took
home fourth and fIfth place plastic,
respectively.
