Robbie Reynard (671) roosted Jeromy Buehl (36), Dag Boyesen (45) and Ty Harris (655) in the 250cc A class qualifier. Record turnout at Muddy Creek By Barbara and Loren Williams BLOUN1VILLE, TN, OCT. 24-25 record turnout of 1044 entries at the Honda Top Gun Showdown eclisped all previous Muddy Creek Raceway records, as riders from across the nation fought for their share of the glory at the final round of the 1992 Pizza Plus AMA Southeastern Regional MX Championship Megaseries. The Victory Sports crew paid' out over $6500 in pro money, plus trophies and contingencies donated by Scott USA, Oury, Bell,' Dunlop, Motul, Boyesen, Neeley Racing, Hammerhead Graphics, A 10 Pro Circuit, AXO, Phillips 66 Racing Fuel, Sam Thomas Racing and GatorZ. Three riders emerged as double class winners at the event: Kevin Windham in the Schoolboy and 125cc B classes, C\lrtis Vrps in the +25 Master and Unlimited Amateur classes, and to no one's surprise - Mike Brown in the 125 and '250cc A classes. Of the three, though, Brown surely must have been the happiest, as he went home '$1000 richer for his double-class sweep. Last year's Top Gun winner in the Senior Mini class and runner-up in the Schoolboy division, Windham, improved his Muddy Creek showings dramatically with his pair of wins. Thing's weren't all easy for Windham, though, as he struggled in his first race of the weekend - the Schoolboy class qualifier. Suzuki's Greg Rand grabbed the opening holeshot, but· yielded to Windham as they descended the stairstep jumps. The pair began to open some daylight on the rest of the pack, but before the first lap was complete, Windham went down. As Rand cruised to the win, Windham limped past the checkered flag next-to-Iast. The return match began in much the same manner, as Rand again jumped in front, with Windham in tow. This time,' though, Windham stayed cool under pressure and lost no ground. Rand scored the win, but Windham was close behind and qualified for Sunday's onemoto shootout. Danny Haynes was out front briefly on Sunday's Schoolboy Shootout, but was quickly nosed out after the first tum by Shane Berryhill, who was racing with a 102-degree fever. Berryhill and Matt Maximoff argued over the lead for most of lap one, until Maxim6ff crashed in the woods whoop section. After suffering a poor start, Windham worked through the field and quickly filled the gap left by Maximoff. Windham moved into second place behind Berryhill with Richie Horton in , third. Berryhill succumbed to Windham's charges on lap two. Windham scooted into the lead with Horton close behind. Berryhill faded to an eventual eighth. While Berryhill was slowing, Maximoff was on ·the move and blasted back from dead last to slide into third place behind Windham and Horton. But five laps on the 1.3-mile Muddy Creek circuit wasn't enough time for Maximoff to make up more positions, and at the finish the order was Windham, Horton, Maximoff, Haynes and Scott Graves. Rand was absent from Sunday's Schoolboy Shootout, explaining that he used Saturday's qualifiers to gain valuable track time since the Pro classes were run only on Sunday. The lprgest class of the weekend was the 125cc B class, and 42 anxious riders filled the gate. Maximoff, new to the class, streaked into the front position in the first moto and went on uncontested for the win. Windham maintained second throughout the race; while John Brunck, Nathan Ramsey and Ryan Pauley rounded out the top five. Moto two' saw Brunck grab the holeshot and crash on the opening lap. He watched helplessly as rider after
