Larry Roeseler swapped his 250cc machine for an Open class bike and finished third. Paul Ostbo, the Vet-elass winner, finished six minutes behind Hamel in second overall. the final round began, and the neck'n-neck battle' between the top two contenders went all the way to the checkers. "I was running second until I caught the guy from Colorado (David Rockwell)," said Art More, the other Senior in contention. "I was getting really tired but I wasn't going to slow down , until I got to the end." Hamel did not slow down until the finish line was in sight, either. The racer from Nevada brought his bike out, of loop two in just over an hour to daim the overall win and put the finishing touches on his second Na,tional Hare & Hound Championship title in two years. "It was a good course - they threw in a rough section, then gave you a nice section to relax in. The traction , was excellent and you couldn't have asked for a better day," said Kawasaki/ Answer/Metzeler/Maxima/Magnum/ Acerbis/Beam/Don Joy/RKlF&L/N ~ Style/Powerbar/Pro Circuit/Scott USA/Scotts/Back Canteen/Shoeif Sprocket Specialists/MXA-backed Hamel. ,"I want to thank my parents for supporting me all year, putting up with me and makiDg all this possible. I want to thank my mechanic, Mike Hodges, for taking care of the bike all year and doing a great job, and my girlfriend Becky. They made me number one this year for sure." . Ostbo crossed the line six minutes behind Hamel to take second overall and his sixth Vet class victory in this year's series. "I thought this was a three-loop race. I was waiting for the young buck to wear out and I was going to get him," joked Kawasaki/Scotts/Pirellil Maxima/Trick/Yoko/Renthal/FMF/ Bell-sponsored Otsbo, as he inspected his rear tire. "It's a street-legal, DOTapproved Pirelli that I'm doing some testing on for dual sport riders. It still looks really good - a lot better than some of the off-road tires." RoeseIer enjoyed the tighter terrain of the second loop on his way to third overall, and KTM/Yoko-backed Hoy and Kawasaki's Ondas rounded out the Open class domination of the top five. ' . Lewis crossed the line in sixth place to take the 250cc honors, narrowly edging out Young, who scored first place in the Four-Stroke class. "We don't let motocrossers beat us," joked Kawasaki-backed Lewis, who reported a smooth ride from start to finish. "I never fell down - just a good, safe ride all the way." Young said he enjoyed hls first taste of desert racing, and would enjoy it even more if somebody would remove all the rocks. ''I'm not used to rocks and just about the whole thing was rocks. I just couldn't handle those, but I liked the rest of it," said Young. "It was different, and the high speed is fun." Charlie Morris, Jr. galloped home second in the 250cc Expert division, despite the handicap of a borrowed bike. "I borrowed it from my father. It's completely stock. No suspension or anything," said Mon-is. Hunnicutt crossed the finish in 10th place, ahead of Vet 250cc winner Parry, and Bill Fullmer, whose thundering Honda earned second in the FourStroke division. "I had a really good start today and I just fell back from there. Other riders just kept on going by but I had a good time," said Fullmer. Capt edged Kawell out of the 125cc class win by a matter of secqnds and claimed-l6th overall. Dana Van Stee made it three in a row for Kawasaki when he came home third in 22nd overall. "It was okay for a 125," said Van Stee. "It was really fast and it was choppy. It wasn't the best I've seen." After racing Van Stee all day, Suzuki RM125 pilot Chance Maughan had to Todd Hoy rode to a third-place finish in the Open class, and was fourth overall. , be content finishing two places behind him. "I was beating him until I crashed in the rocks about 10 miles out from the pits. Then I caught back up and hit a cactus," said the Utah racer. Wes Anderson took the checkered flag in 30th overall, to score the Over40 win nine places ahead of his nearest rival, Steve Thompson. Bob Wadlow finished t~ird. "It was great - really a nice course, and I got a one-kick start," said Anderson. And the happiest finisher of all was More, whose 52nd-place finish put him just ahead of David Rockwell and on top of the Over-50 series ,points tally.
