Laningham rolls to title at Bonneville Road Race By Jon F. Renak SALT LAKE CITY, UT,OCT.18 The Utah Sport Bike Association's Summer Road Racing Series ended on a high note this year for Aaron Laningham when he fought off a late-lap challenge by Oillon Husband to place second, in the Heavyweight Superbike race and guarantee his spot at the top of the class. Laningham looked as if he would easily win the race after exploding off the starting grid and locking in the all-important holeshot through the first comer at Bonneville, but Kal Davidson and Husband stayed close enough through the early laps to keep Suzuki GSXR750-mounted Laningham in sight. Davidson and Husband closed the gap through the middle laps and diced with each other in an effort to overtake Laningham. Davidson held tight m second and made his move in turn eight of the final lap of the race, sweeping under the leader through the high speed turn and accelerating through the gears to the final tum and the checkered flag. Laningham barely held onto second as Husband used the draft to follow Davidson. "I didn't think they were that close," Laningham said, "but I knew if Kal was there then Dillon would be right behind him, so I went into overdrive." Laningham needed at least a second-place finish m overtake the absent Xtreem Performance rider Damon Carr, and win the class championshi p. In other action, Husband guaranteed himself at least a top five overall Expert plate by competing in a grueling seven races and winning three of them. His shining moment came in the Unlimited Superbike race while riding his Honda CBR600F2 against the big bikes. He came from behind to. slip by Kawasaki ZX7()()-mounted Davidson in the eighth lap of an excellent race to win by a bike length. In Amateur action, Dax Snow has become the one to watch in the Heavyweight classes. Suzuki-mounted Snow swept both the Supersport and Superbike races as· well as the Unlimited class. He got some heavy competition from Idaho newcomer Darren Spiers who placed second behind him in three of those races. Results 38 SPTSMN GTU AM: I. Brent Bone (Han); 2. Brett Hadley (Kaw); S. Oakley/Pro-Action/NoLimitiRM 259-backed Yoho pulled away for the win, with Hampshire holding off McCabe, Voell and Hudson. Yoho blasted out of the gate to lead moLO two with Hampshire and McCabe on his heels. Hampshire zipped by Yoho in the second tum, but had bike problems and let Yoho and McCabe sail by. II Geoff Aaron came 'from Connecticut to capture LOp honors at this unique stadium trials in an industrial park of a Chicago suburb. Aaron rides for team Aprilia and the Tryals Shop and showed everyone just what kind of skill it takes to be the number two rider in the nation. Aaron was especially smooth after the first loop. The checker in section four reported that Aaron crashed heavily on the first loop, but came back on the next loop riding over the massive logs as if he were on a cloud. The Aprilia-mounted rider rode the entire last loop without taking a single mark against himl Sven Bly organized the Indus-Trial in the parking lot of his engineering company. The firm borders a railroad track and has a few hills (if you want to call them that) along the border. A huge pile of massive logs formed the basis for three sections while a drainage ditch made sure that everyone got a few drops of mud on them. Because of the close proximity of the sections m each other, and the location in a Chicago suburb, the event was well attended by spectators. Ray Peters, also from Team Aprilia, came in from New York to take second in the Championship class. Several times Peters would perch on one leg with the other leg stuck out in the air while he tried to keep his balance. His moves were ballet-like and his performance was very close to Aaron's. Jim Snell had organized a similar trials the day before in Indiana, but decided this was his day to ride. He led the Expert class with 47 points while Eric Settee, a number-one plate holder in Minnesota, finished a close second. lllinois rider Jim Altemus rode his Fantic to a third place finish. In the Novice class, John Wellenstein rode his Yamaha to a fine 45-point finish. Jeff Koniak, who had taken a second place the day before in Indiana, finished second again. What's the old saying about always a bridesmaid, but never a bride? Phil Jacob and Brad Johns tied for third but Jacob got the nod because of more clean rides. Results C'SHIP: I. By Becky Torrance BURLESON, TX, OCT. 11 Charley Bogard smoked both motos of the 80cc Open class at the second round of the Top Texan Fall Series, held at Burleson MX Park. Bogard was. the only 80cc rider that dared double a large tabletop jump. While he charged at the head of the pack in moto one, Jason Eckhoff and Chris Torrance battled over second and third positions. Bogard easily won' the moLO, followed by Eckhoff. In the second mom, Eckhoff and Torrance continued where they had left off, dicing over the number-two spot behind Bogard, who again led the field. Bogard's perfect I-I mom tally gave him the overall victory, and Eckhart nabbed the runner-up spot with his dual second-place finishes. Bogard also won the 80cc Senior (12-13) class. Kawasaki-mounted Kirk. Lee led the 125cc Novice class' first moto off the start, followed by Chris Samples and Justin Stewart. Samples took over the lead early in the opening lap when Lee fell. Samples was followed by Kns Neubauer, Stewart, Tommy Rapp and Jerry Hill. During lap two, Jason Beam made an aggressive move on Hill as they entered the whoops, taking over the number-five spot. Lee maintained his lead to the finish for the mom win. In the second moto, Samples jumped out in front with the holeshot, and he stayed in front until the final lap, when Zeke Daugherty made an inside pass in a big sweeper for the mom win. Samples' 1-2 mom finish still awarded him first overall, while Daugherty's 5-1 score netted him the runner-up position. There was some heavy competition in the l25cc Intermediate division... ltandy Denby pulled the first-moLO holeshot ahead of Brian Carlson and T.]. Patel. Carlson passed Denby for the lead before the first lap ended, while Patel began to apply pressure to Denby. Denby overshot a turn on lap two, falling back to fourth position as Patel and Dennis Bonner shot around him. A battle over second position ensued between Patel and Bonner, while Carlson continued his lead. Bonner finally secured second position from Patel on the third lap, and Brad Woolsey charged up from a bad start to pass Patel for third near the end of the race. Mike Boliver holeshot moLO two, but Carlson once again displaced him and took over the lead. penby diced with Bob Abbott and Brad Woolsey for third place, all three of the riders remaining within one bike length of each other as they circulated the track. On lap five, Woolsey and Boliver bumped and went down in the whoops, with Boliver remounting before Woolsey. Carlson rode on to the mom and overall wins, while Boliver recovered for second. Denby's 4-3 tally earned him second overall in the class. Results' 50: I. Chase Reed (Yam); 2. Logan Williams (Yam); S. Ryan York (Yam); 4. BrianBamhill (itj);5. BrocBooth(Yam). 60: I. Bret Hamilton topped the 250cc Expert class at Abnormal Promotions' Stockton Rough Scrambles, held at the San Joaquin Count)' Fairgrounds. After styling his way to the win in his heat, Hamilton was ready for main event action. He battled the first couple of laps with Yamaha-mounted Dennis Kritzer, then took control of the lead and motored away to .the win. Monty Owenby was riding hot, and after brother Jason dropped out when his KTM developed mechanical woes, Monty advanced to second. But the rider to watch was fast advancing toward the front-runners after going down at the start. Honda-mounted Eric Bostrom worked inside and outside from tum to turn, picking off riders. By the white flag he was past Owenby, but Hamilton was nearly a half a lap ahead and so Bostrom finished in second. Anthony Houser blasted in for the win in the Pee Wee Modified heat race, but Jenna Ellis would not be denied the win in the uiain. For the entire race, Ellis and Houser dueled it out. At the finish line, Houser made one final bid LO get by, but Ellis arrived a split second before the win. Honda-mounted Jason Ellis and Kawasaki-
