GFIFallSeriesNorth:Rounds3&4 MOTOCROSS ~ ~ Gomm grabs Hanford, Hollister victories By Tom Pritchard HANFORD, CA, OCT. 17 HOLLISTER, CA, OCT. 18 at Comm displayed versatility at rounds three and four of the CFI Winter Series North, as he trounced the 250cc Pro class on Saturday on the tight and technical Hanford Fairgrounds track, and did the same on Sunday on the wide-open natural terrain Hollister Hills SRVA course. . Comm swept three of four motos to earn his pair of wins. Hard-charging Jeff Pestana topped Comm in Sunday's second .moto at Hollister, but a. big getoff in the first moto hampered his overall score. P Saturday When the 250cc Pros left the line, John Stark grabbed the holeshot, followed by Gomm and Josh Boykin. Before thefirst lap was over, Camm put his Yamaha underneath Stark to take the lead and pull away. While Camm and Stark were battling, Paladino out-jumped Boykin and moved into third. Camm pulled out a 10 secoQd lead by the time the finish flag came out Camm took the moto win with second going to Stark. Paladino 'finished a distant third and filling out the top five were Boykin and Jack Azevedo. In moto two, Stark again 'showed lightning reflexes by taking another holeshot. In a repeat of the first moto, Camm passed Stark in the same place as before, again on the first lap. Just past the finish line, Stark almost went over the bars and allowed Boykin to.dose in. In the next turn, Boykin put his Yamaha underneath Stark. Stark bobbled and allowed Paladino to close in. By now, both Camm and Boykin were gone, with Camm holding a five-bike length lead all the way to the checkered flag. Boykin had managed to cut Camm'~ lead in half, but time ran out before he' could close any farther. Stark smoothed out and held third to the finish, giving him second overall. Fourth went to Paladino, and rounding out the top five was again Azevedo.. Dan Paladino grabbed the holeshot in the first 125cc Pro moto and held on for . the win. His win did not come unchallenged however, as Rusy Holland kept pace with Paladino for the entire moto. Holland gated second behind Paladino and managed to take the lead away from the Kawasaki rider on lap two. Paladino tied himself to Holland's Suzuki as the leading duo left everyone else far behind. It looked for the next several laps as if Holland would be able to hold his lead as he opened a slight four-bike length lead on second. Then, on· lap six, Holland came down a very rough straight section of the track and bounced completely off the bike. The kickers bounced him off to one side of his bike and it looked as if Holland would go down. Instead, Holland grabbed the throttle and pulled himself back on to the machine. He managed to stay' upright and get back up to speed, but not before Paladino was able to get back around. Paladino held on for the win. Holland settled for second with third going to Eric Ducray. Moto two saw Holland gate first, hoping for a little better luck this time and immediately pulled a 15-bike length lead over Paladino. It took the Kawasaki rider five laps to close down the gap before taking the lead coming out of a fast sweeper onto the front straight Holland tied himself to Paladino's rear tire and when they came up on a lapped rider, Paladino was forced to go wide, allowing Holland to dive underneath and back into the lead. Paladino tried everything he could to retake' the lead, but Holland rode flawlessly tv take the win. Holland's second moto win was good enough to give him the overall, with second going to Paladino and third to Ducray, who again' took third in the moto. Sunday Riders made the move to Hollister for round four; and they were greeted by a perfect day for racing. The track was groomed to perfection and held up well under the 400-plus riders who came out. , When the 250cc Pros fired off the liqe and down the long start straight for their ·first moto, Paladino grabbed the lead. · While Paladino got the holeshot, it was Tyler Hummel who headed up the hill with the lead. Pushing Paladino in third, was Jeff Pestana. Pestana quickly moved into second and set out after the leader Hummel. Soon after getting passed by Pestana, Paladino was also passed by Holland. Just past the finish line, · Pestana got into a terrific tank-slapper and went down. Pestana's £all put Holland into second and moved Paladino to third. Camm, who had suffered a seventh-place start, had moved to fourth and was putting tremendous pressure on Paladino. In the same turn that Pestana went down, a lap previously, Camm also got sideways and went down. The gap between Camm and John Stark was enough' to allow Camm to hold his position, but he was not 10 seconds behind Paladino. Hummel managed to open a IO-bike length lead over Holland, with Paladino very close in third. Two laps later, Camm was once again on Paladino's heels. Comm drove Paladino to the outside of a turn and went jnto third.' With Holland in his sights, Camm was soon on' his rear fender. Hummel was enjoying a slight but comfortable lead before making a slight bobble in tum three, allowing Holland and Camm to dose in. Gomm outjumped Holland heading up the hill into second with two laps left to go. Camm then closed on Hummel's back tire on the final lap. Hummel looked to be able to hold the lead as they went out of sight behind the tower into an off-camber turn. Everyone waited for the two riders to come into view, but they had both collided and went down. Comm got up first and notched the win. Holland managed to pass.the downed Hummel to finish second. Hummel Dan Paladino (2.13) holeshot Sunday's first 250cc Pro moto at Hollister. Jeff Pestana (5) crashed hard while chasing the leaders, but bounced back to win moto two. remounted to finish third, followed by Paladino and Stark. As they headed back to the. pits, Hummel had words with Camm ad stormed off. "There was two lines through that turn," said Comm. "We both took different lines and came out.together and collided, that was it." In moto two, Paladino again got the holeshot, followed by Camm and Hummel. Pestana held fourth as they headed up the hill. In the same tum he took . ·the lead in moto one, Camm put a move on Pestana and again took over first Following Camm around Paladino was Pestana, who had passed Hummel off the double jumps just two turns before. Pestana then lit the jets and easily reeled in Camm. As the leaders headed up the hill and into the horseshoe turn, Pestana drove around the outside of Camm and moved into the lead. Paladino and Hummel were involved in a heated battle about five seconds back. Pestana, who crashed on lap one of the first moto, slowly pulled away from the tiring Comm, who knew that the overall was his if he finished second. In the meantime, Paladino and Hummel separated themselves and also settled in to their positions. When the checkered flag came out, Pestana took the win well ahead of Camm. Third went to Paladino, giving him second overall. Fourth place gave Hummel third overall, with Rusty Holland rounding out the top five. CN Results SATURDAY . 50 STK: I. Wesley Palterson (Hon); 2.
